Crop of Spring Flowers under the sink!

The other day I found a section of old chrome plumbing pipe in full bloom under a homes bathroom sink.  It really was a pretty sight to behold.  The blooms were bluish green and were caused by corrosion of the pipe and chemicals that had been used to "clean" the drains.

This is fairly common with metal drain lines, traps, etc.  What is uncommon is that you seldom find a pipe like this in full bloom!  Most of the time when they get to this stage of bloom they are leaking like a sieve and the section has been replaced.

So if you have metal drain pipes take a look and see if you have a bumper crop of blooms.   If you find a pipe that has even the smallest amount of corrosion or discoloration, go ahead and replace that section of pipe.  The damage starts from the inside of the pipe and it might not be leaking now but it will be soon, it is only a matter of time.

Oh, and a word to the wise!  Do not pick the blooms!  If you do you will need a bucket to catch the water that will flow from the vase that was holding that pretty flower!!

Good clue to check the drains for blockage.

I always note what type of containers they have under the sinks to.If I see roach spray , you can bet what I will be looking for.

Great Post Scott, We see and call them out all the time and typically the client or Realtor will say "what is the problem, it isn't leaking" To which I reply, "not yet" (smiling gently) knowing what will happen in the near future.

Hi Michael,

I found some more today!

I made the fatal mistake of brushing up against the pipe!  I reached my arm up under the sink to check the valve and my arm hit the pipe.  Yep, when I turned the water on at the sink it leaked like a sieve.

Great photo!  Those chrome pipes are sure vulnerable, especially if you nudge them!  Funny,  I just commented on this on one of my blogs referencing being careful 'testing' corroded parts; toilet float arms, P-trap pipes..etc!

Thanks for the reminder!

Looks like mushrooms to me.  I haven't seen that yet and hope that I don't.
