Buying or selling a multi family unit in Chicago or the suburbs takes a little more coordination compared to other real estate transactions.
We all have experienced some obstacles showing a condo or a single family home. Missing keys, showing only at certain times, no weekends, no after this and that hour and so on... Not always, but we run into difficulties.
When buying or selling a multi family unit, the buyer needs to see all the units, possibly at the same time. If the renter is there, he may not be cooperative. Could even be the same family and we all have different schedules, etc.
During the summer of 2013 I had all sorts of different experiences with multi family units in Chicago. Patience and understanding was the key when encountering these common specifics:
- Owner needs to be present
- Listing agent needs to be present
- You can see only one unit this week
- Showing on weekends only
- Showing after 6pm only
