Using Vibrant Colors to Help Sell Your Home

Spring is generally viewed as the best time to sell a home in Southeastern Massachusetts. The drab, dreary, and gray days of winter are behind us. The days are getting longer, the grass is greener, leaves are budding on trees, and flowers are blooming. Many home buyers have awakened from their winter slumber, are looking to make a move. And those with children want to move before school starts in the fall.

But the autumn season is also a great time of year. The long, hot, lazy, hazy, crazy, and humid days of summer are over. For many people, it’s either back to work or back to school. In addition, the days are getting shorter, the air is cool and crisp, it’s harvest season, and the leaves are changing colors and falling to the ground. While green grass and blooming flowers can do wonders for curb appeal, so can the vibrant colors of fall.

People buy and sell homes all year long for a variety reasons. Things such as a job change or relocation, a growing family, marriage and divorce, and retirement are but a few reasons why people want to move. That means there are still many buyers out there looking for a new place to live. And those who are actively looking are motivated ─ they want to settle into their new homes before the holidays.

A recent survey shows that almost half of the buyers in the autumn season are either first-time home buyers or are those who have a growing family and want to move up to a larger home. Those who are relocating because of their jobs and those who are downsizing or retiring make up another 28% of those moving in the fall, while investors make up 14% of those who are looking to buy a home.

Many homes look great when framed in the brilliant colors of autumn. So, use it to your advantage. You’ll want to make your home warm and cozy for prospective buyers. Start with placing potted seasonal plants ─ such as Chrysanthemums, New England Asters, or marigolds ─ at the front door, on the front porch, or along the walkway to the door. You may also want to add a few cornstalks and a pumpkin or two. This will add rich autumn colors to your home and make it more attractive to the buyers.

Make your home look its best amongst the fall foliage. Mow the lawn, rake the leaves, and pick up sticks and twigs. Cut back on overgrown bushes and shrubs, and cut out the dead flowers. Also, put the children’s toys and bicycles away. Check your gutters and downspouts to make sure they are clean of any debris ─ especially leaves and pine needles.

On the inside, make sure your home is warm. Now’s not the time to turn down the heat to save on energy costs. If buyers feel cold in your house, they’ll be in a hurry to leave. If you have a fireplace, re-arrange your furniture to that it’s the focal point of the room. Don’t forget to decorate the mantel as well. Consider using bright red, gold and orange leaves and a tall vase filled with bittersweet branches decorated with plump orange berries.

You’ll want to add a little autumn color in each of your rooms by adding seasonal touches in rich autumn colors. For the dining room table, create an autumn centerpiece made from pine cones, nuts, dried berries, and orange candles. For the kitchen, add a basket of apples on the countertop.

Finally, the days are getting shorter, and buyers will less likely be visiting your home in the evening. Make sure the windows are clean, and the blinds and curtains are drawn. You’ll want to be able to bring as much natural light into the room as you can.

Hi Matt, I have found that if you use vibrant colors in your own home, it helps to motivate you to look at other homes the same way.
