5 Steps to a Closet that Sells!

When it comes to bedroom closets, whether you are a homeseller, a new homeowner, or long-time resident in your current place, cleaning them is an excellent way to declutter, organize, AND make your storage space feel larger, which is sure to make you (and prospective buyers) happy. Sounds like a win-win to me!

Closets that buyers love

  • Clean It. Take everything out - we mean everything! Once the closet itself is empty, vacuum, dust and clean the entire space. Not only will it look better, but your clothes will keep cleaner and you'll reduce the presence of allergens.
    • Hint: Now that it's empty, if you have the room, add a mirror, a piece of framed art, or wallpaper to kick things up a notch.
  • Declutter It. Many times our closets hold much more than we need or even want them to. The contents grow over the years until there is no room for any kind of organizational system to function properly. Sort all your items and decide to Keep, Toss, or Donate them. Then organize those things that you have decided will go back into the closet according to type, as you wish. Group by occasion (work, casual, dressy) or by garment type (pants, shirts, suits).
    • Hint: Group your hanging clothing in each category by color for an instantly professional look.
  • Upgrade It. Changing out your hangers from wire or even plastic to matching velvet coated or wood is one way to streamline your closet, as well as increase it's function be reducing fallen clothes and messy hanging. Using only one kind of hanger throughout your closet ensures that every garment hangs at the same height. While this may not be essential, it does wonders for overall visual appeal.
    • Hint: You don't have to invest in new hangers all at once. Utilize coupons from your local bed and bath store to upgrade 10-25 hangers at a time over the course of a few weeks or months.
  • Organize It. In your closet your mantra should be: a place for everything and everything in its place. Before putting anything back in the closet, see which items require the most space. What items do you use most often? Make sure they are up front and easily accessible. Establish a permanent home for each type of clothing and stick to it.
    • Hint: You don't need fancy organizers and kits to do the job. Use a regular hanger paired with shower curtain rings to hang scarfs, ties or belts. Place pieces of pool "water noodles" inside tall boots to keep them upright.
  • Don't Overfill It! A packed closet doesn't function, doesn't look very nice, and doesn't sell! You don't want to send the message that the space is desperately too small. Hopefully you solved this issue during the declutter step, but if not, remember that folded clothes take up less space then crumpled ones and store out of season or special occasion clothes elsewhere, if you're out of room.
    • Hint: If you are selling your home, only half-fill your closet and keep only what you need for the weeks you will be showing the house. Your closets will look fabulous and when you sell your home, any temporary inconveniencewill have been well worth it.

Very thorough closet checklist.  I don't want my wife to see this as ours breaks all these rules.  But I can how this is a big improvement that would take nothing but your labor to make major improvements in appearance when putting the house on the market.

Closets are a hot item for sure. Many very nice homes get passed over as the closets just appear too small. Decluttering and oy putting back in 1/2 the stuff sounds like great tips.
