I've always marvelled at the various award shows, competition shows and the like where tearful acceptance speeches and other blather passes for a thank you. Some Hollywood types, trying to squeeze it all in remind me of that old bumper sticker that also tried to be all things to all people: NUKE A GAY WHALE FOR JESUS!
While I believe that many of the folks winning competitions and accepting awards are truly talented, they could take a lesson from the stars of yesterday who, while elegantly dressed, politely thanked the academy for their selection and briefly thanked close colleagues and family who supported their efforts or in some way touched them during the process. Instead, we hear about their pet causes. We hear about those less fortunate. We hear about their opposition to war and their devotion to PETA or how we should all be driving an electric car.
Taking this all to heart, I want to thank my wife Sharon for supporting me and understanding my drive to maintain my status as a self-employed Notary Signing Agent. She has been an integral part, by taking on work outside of our signing business, of keeping me from having to return to a middle-management job. Her knowledge of my love for this profession and her positive reaction to it make me fall in love with her again every day. For those of you out there blindly plodding forward in your own marriage, I have but one piece of advice. Take the time to find out what your spouse really loves passionately. Then, take extraordinary measures (as my wife has done) and do everything in your power to give that to your spouse. This is a gift that will bind you closer than you might have ever imagined.
I wish for each of you the kind of support I receive daily from my wife and family... For when you reach for the stars and miss, then reach again while standing on their shoulders, you will truly grasp your dream.
