Hell HAS frozen over...I agree with President Bush!

By

Speaking to members of the Economic Club of New York yesterday, President Bush had this to say:bush

"I'm coming to you as an optimistic fellow, I've seen what happens when America deals with difficulty. I believe that we're a resilient economy. And I believe that the ingenuity and resolve of the American people is what helps us deal with these issues, and it's going to happen again."

Heaven help me, I never thought I'd hear these words coming out of my mouth, but I couldn't agree with President Bush more!

Born of a legitimate concern over the current downturn in the nation's economy--and particularly, in the housing sector--and fanned by a media who knows all to well that "bad news sells," we have become a nation increasingly paralyzed by fear.

Yet, as one of my favorite presidents--Franklin Delano Roosevelt--so famously said in his first inaugural address:

"...the only thing we have to fear is fear itself..."

fdrThat is one of the most iconic quotes in history. Yet, how many of us knows the rest of that quote?

"...the only thing we have to fear is fear itself-nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance."

I would like to see us, as a community of real estate professionals, do our very best to "convert retreat into advance" by joining President Bush in his beliefs in the "ingenuity and resolve of the American people."

And, just as a warning, you'd better be careful today because I have no idea what the fallout might be from Hell freezing over.

I agree with the President.  Americans will get through the tough times.  It may take a few years, but it will happen.

Michael: LOL!!! I agree...Bush does have a LOT more on the ball than most Americans today give him credit for.  I don't care who your daddy is...you have to have mad skills & ambition to become president.

Brian:  You are absolutely right.  Thanks for the note.

Kim,

The problem is as evident as the old quote " You can wish in one hand and s*** in the other hand, which hand will get full the quickest "

The resolve and ingenuity of the American people is not the issue here. The issue is that the vitality ingenuity and high education standards of developing countries ( those that we used to call third world contries ) are evolving at a rapid pace.

Young americans for he most part want all of the toys now. They are unwilling to put in the work on education that will allow them to be competitive in the future.

We just can no longer sit back and say we are the best. We are not and have not been for quite sometime.

The President hit the nail right on the head. Americans have the power to either keep going in the direction the pessimistic media tells us to go, or to tune them out and go nowhere but up. Lets all choose not to participate in any recession or depression or whatever else the doomsayers say is happening to us.

Herb: I agree, as a nation we have become complacent and lazy...not to mention greedy, which is how we have gotten into this whole mess to begin with.  But, the journey back to being a strong nation will only begin when we BELIEVE we can get there.  Right now, I think too many people are wallowing in self-pity and fear instead of setting their sights on the goal of moving through this dark phase.

Kevin:  I love that quote by Robert Schuler...it is important to remember that!

This is a very thought provoking post and some great comments! I think that there is a great need to remain positive in approaching the difficult work that needs to be done right now. If you look at FDR, he truly led the way with his innovative New Deal programs. While these programs were expensive, they definitely gave people not just jobs but hope. These programs spurred some of the most widespread growth our country has ever seen. I think we really need someone to be the torch bearer! Someone who can (and will) hold up the light of hope for those who have fallen before the fear mongers. There are two wonderful quotes that are also apt and come from the other end of the political spectrum:

There is nothing wrong with America that faith, love of freedom, intelligence, and energy of her citizens cannot cure.

-Dwight D. Eisenhower

AND

There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be cured with what is right in America.

-William J. Clinton

Rich: My hope is that the next president, whoever he--or she--may be, will have the kind of far-reaching vision that FDR did...and the support of the American people to be able to implement that vision. I am optimistic because I think most of us realize the necessity of taking this country in a new direction.

I love the two quotes, by the way!

Gary: That is a lovely way of looking at things...and why not?

Ahhhh LOVED the title!  And I (gasp) agree as well...just b/c I'm from Texas doesn't mean I back him 100%....but I like what he said.  I'm ready for the election in November...and I'm eager to see what happens.

I'm going to add to the above comments and say, that it's not just President Bush (or any President) that is responcible for the economy, it's Congresses job too. So besides waiting to see what happens in the national elections, I'm interested in the congressional elections.
