Last year, the two Bethesda post offices (at 7001 Arlington Rd. and 7400 Wisconsin Ave.) were closed and their operations combined at one location, 6900 Wisconsin Ave. Many Bethesda residents are very unhappy with the 6900 Wisconsin Ave. post office location because of the site's lack of parking. I personally loved going to the old Post Office at 7400 Wisconsin, with its old WPA murals and the statue in front of the Madonna of the Trail, a 1928 sculpture of woman heading west as the country expanded.
This year, the Post Office has been searching for a new post office site in downtown Bethesda but has had no success so far, according to a letter from the U.S. Postal Service. Richard Hancock, a real estate specialist for the Postal Service, wrote in a letter to Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center Director Kenneth B.J. Hartman that:
"After extensive investigations of the available properties in the Bethesda market, no economically viable and operationally feasible properties have been identified for the proposed new Bethesda retail facility. We continue to pursue new alternative options at this time."
The Post Office is planning a new post office which will be about 2,000 square feet, with retail and customer service, and post office boxes, a gathering of Bethesda residents was told last May.
If you want to move to Bethesda, or have a house to sell in Bethesda, be sure to give the Lise Howe Group a call.
Once several sites are in the running, they will be presented to the public through local government channels for a 30-day comment period. Once the site has been selected, the build-out could take anywhere from three to six months, depending on construction challenges, Hancock said.
