One of the things Florida has become infamous for is its sinkhole activity.  Sinkholes in Florida seem to be more and more common, mainly because they happen more frequently in populated areas but also because the news loves to sensationalize things.

The west coast of Florida north of Tampa and Saint Petersburg has been dubbed by some people as sinkhole alley.  This is because more sinkholes occur here than in any other place in North America.

Sinkhole alley is generally defined as covering the northern and mid portion of Hillsborough and Pinellas County, all of Pasco and Hernando County, and the southern portion of Citrus County Florida. Cities/towns in this area include Tampa, Brandon, Lutz, St Petersburg, Clearwater, Dunedin, Tarpon Springs, New Port Richey, Hudson, Land O Lakes, Zephyrhills, Spring Hill, Brooksville, and Homosassa Springs to name a few places.  Below is a sinkhole map.
