Norman H. Gershman shares his expressive photo images, along with the touching words of his subjects in his extraordinary exhibit, Besa: A Code of Honor, currently on display at the Dallas Holocaust Museum Center.
Gershman traveled to Albania to capture the stories and images of Albanian Muslims who sheltered Jewish families during World War II. In the Albanian culture, the word Besa stands for "keeping a promise." Albanians believe that lives of others can be entrusted to those who keep their word or promise. This belief inspired Albanians to shelter Jews in their occupied country.
It is Gershman's hope that his exhibit will enlighten the world about the heroic commitment of Albanian Muslims to save the lives of Jewish families during World War II.
Last Sunday, Gershman's film, Besa: The Promise, was screened at the museum. I was inspired by the love, trust, and courage of the people in this documentary film and their incredible stories that spanned decades. The film is currently being screened around the world and not available in Dallas at this time.
The exhibit, Besa: A Code of Honor, features the people and stories from the film. Take advantage of the opportunity to see this exhibit and learn about the people who made an enormous difference in the lives of others. May their legacy live on in the hearts and minds of others.
