Thursday's Thought: Knowledge

By
Real Estate Agent with Remax First Realty II 0790808

"The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it's the illusion of knowledge." - Stephen Hawking

Stephen HawkingA great quote by a man who may arguably be the smartest man who has ever lived.  As we go about our daily routine, prospecting, showing and selling, do we learn or do we know?

We've all dealt with another agent that has no idea what they're doing.  Or a seller who knows it all because 20 years ago they sold a house on their own.  Those are the deals that are usually the most difficult.  The illusion of knowledge.

I would rather say "I don't know, let me find out the answer and get back to you" than pretend to have one, only to proven wrong.  How do you deal with the illusion of knowledge?

Zuhl Team...sometimes it just doesn't make sense to beat a dead horse....I use to tell them they knew just enough to get themselves in trouble!!!  they didn't want to end up in court and that would make them back down....

Offer the best advice you can - that's all you can do with a difficult client. And for professionals, no matter how many years of experience we have under our belt, we never stop learning. Great food for thought. Thanks for sharing!

Wayne and Jean - I normally allow the illusion to dissolve on it's own. Wisdome is the ability to take knowledge and apply it to your everyday life. That's really what we all want.

Profit from my two decades of experience

When asked a question by a client I don't know the answer to I typically will respond let me find out for you and then get back to them.

I would agree - I prefer the "let me find out" approach, even if I'm 99% sure of something.  The illusion of knowledge can be very frustrating to deal with.  Love the quote & the post!

Wayne and Jean - nothing is worse than the illusion of knowledge.   Some people are afraid to say they don't know.  That raises doubts in itself.  No one knows everything.

Great question. My response? Depends on the situation. In particular, it depends on the other person. What approach do I need to take? I would probably ask a lot of questions to get clarity on the "source" of their knowledge.

Very thought provoking.

Wayne & Jean, I just had a deal not get to acceptance because my opinion is that the other side's agent could use to learn a bit more about how things can be done.  I tried unsuccessfully lead her down a win-win path, but no luck.  They'd rather chase an offer that MIGHT come versus the one they had in writing.

Wayne&Jean Marie~ahhh, the pretense of knowledge. I am more like you said..."That's a great question. Let me get back with you". Excellent point!

I have always told them that I don't know but will find out. Just like you do. So much safer that way.
