Blacksburg going green- renovating the old Doc Roberts building

Little ole Blacksburg is going green! While we've been making steps toward being green like a successful recycling campaign and the use of biofuel in all town vehicles, this is the first major building renovation heading in the 'green' direction.

The old Blacksburg Motor Company (of as some refer to it the Doc Roberts building) was purchased in April 2007 by the town of Blacksburg to be remodeled into the Municipal Services Annex. They're aiming for Platinum LEED certification, the highest LEED certification available. Renovation has already started- they've torn out the inside and are working on the facade. They are currently working on placing this building on the National Register of Historic Buildings which would give them 35% of the renovation cost. Here's a look at the site plans:

I think it is great that so many people are thinking of making buildings "green".  I think it is something builders and remodelers should do more and more.

Kat, that's great! Not only are they renovating as opposed to tearing down, they'll be making a difference for the environment. Great news!

Lois- I agree! I've taken a few classes that talk about green/sustainable building and I think it's a fabulous idea. Not only is it god for the environment but it's cost effective.

Mom- Next time you're up you have to stop by- it's gonna look really nice.
