I recently attended an art and jewelry charity auction at a local chamber here in Brevard County, Florida, where I had donated a piece of my own artwork to be auctioned off. It was a small watercolor abstract painting that I had done a few months back. I am not the world’s greatest artist by any means and haven’t really done that much painting since getting into real estate over a decade ago. But it was for a good cause and I thought it would be a good way to meet people and have a fun evening.
During the auction my biggest fear was that no one would bid on the piece. My second biggest fear was that I would have to speak in front of the crowd about the artwork and, like most people, public speaking isn’t something I look forward to doing. As the auctioneer got closer to displaying my painting my heart started beating… my hands were getting clammy and I felt my face turn a very unattractive beat red. Finally my piece was up and the auctioneer said ‘would the artist like to say a few words about the piece?”. Given my already nervous state I clammed up and stammered ‘no, not really…’ and the bidding continued until someone finally bought it. I breathed a sigh of relief.
After the bidding was over, a woman who was sitting next to me told me that she would have loved to have heard what was going on with me when I did the painting and how it would have given it more meaning to know why the artist did what they did. I told her that I am kind of a naturally reserved and somewhat shy person, and, also, I haven’t been a professional artist for many, many years and wasn’t used to speaking about my artwork. She said it didn’t matter. I needed to learn how to share myself and show myself to the world. She said to me “You shared your art.. now share your heart!”.
This was quite a lesson to me. Through this experience and the intervention of a very special person, I realized that sharing your heart can translate into everything you do. Although I am passionate about painting, I am also passionate about real estate and helping people. Now, I practice the art of real estate and helping people navigate what is often times the biggest transaction of their lives. I learned that opening yourself to those around you and especially to those you help is the key to success. And it’s the best gift you can give to the world, and yourself!
