Swim When Your Ready- Becoming A Broker
When I was young, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. At one point, I recall looking through the local community college class schedule, they offered real estate classes. I recall there was one class to be an agent and another to be a broker. I recall thinking, well if I was going to do this, I would have be a broker. If they had a separate class and it required more house it had to be a higher position. Then, my interest wandered to something else.
Years later, I actually entered the world of real estate. In Virginia you have to be a full time agent for three of the last five years before you can take the classes and apply to be a broker. As my third anniversaly in real estate approached, I signed up for the online broker classes. Perfect, slow time of the year, I would have free time for studying. it doesnt always work that way. My wife and business partner hurt her foot, we fired out assistant and i had to train a new one... one thing after another.
Several moths pass and one day I have an extra hour so I log into the online tests. I receive a notice my account is about to expire. I call the school, there is a time limit on the class. Fortunately, I had spend the hours to complete most of the classes. So I am faced with completing the classes with a short time or re-enrolling and paying full price again.
No way was I going to pay for the same class twice! So I barricaded myself in my home office. I read, studied, and took online tests. I finished the class and passed the schools test. Then came the hard part, the test required by the state.
While I didnt feel prepared, I hit a wall. I couldn't do it anymore.. Pass or fail.. just take the test and be done.
I passed the first time!
I felt lucky, exhausted and elated.
Was it worth it, yes! In Virginia the real estate laws limit somethings REALTOR can do. Being a broker allows me the freedome notallowed by agents. I became broker of record for our property management company and have been offered the Broker of Record position for our Keller Williams office. I turned down the position because I think we need someone with more years in the business. But I am honored to be asked.
