How to have green grass in a drought!

Well as many of you know we are in a severe drought in California.  As I drive through neighborhoods here in the Sacramento area more and more lawns are turning brown while California is imposing new laws to restrict water use.  California has started imposing fines as of August 1, 2014 of up to $500 for each water violation.  What does this mean to California homeowners?  Will this mean that neighbors will turn each other in for over use of water?

From a recent news report ~ The new rules ban washing cars without a nozzle on a hose; watering driveways or sidewalks; using potable water in ornamental fountains; and over-watering landscaping so that water runs off into roads and adjacent properties. Recycled water is exempt.

Under the new statewide rules, any agency that does not impose mandatory conservation measures could be subject to state fines of up to $10,000 a day.

California water use

Although we are in a drought some counties have increased their water use...this seems crazy with all the signs around us of a severe drought.   I'm proud to say that Sacramento's water use has decreased more dramatically than all of the rest of the state!

When you are selling a home, curb appeal is extremely important...so what do you do in this drought to help your curb appeal when you have a brown yard and you have water restrictions?  Sneak out in the middle of the night and water your lawn?  Well, water rates are on the increase also!

I was very against artificial turf for the longest time...it seemed to me that it would not be liked by potential buyers and it would be a detriment to selling your home in California.  Well, I have recently changed my stance on this.  Take a look at these 2 lawns....

Although Brown Grass is Sexy in the drought, if you are thinking of buying a home, which front yard would appeal to you?  So, what can you do to fight this?  What about artificial turf?  Look at my before and after photos of the backyard at our Elk Grove home...

Walking on it feels better than the old dead grass, the dog loves it, no water is required...so what's not to love?  It looks great!  And best of all....I love it.  I think this is a great answer in the current drought to adding curb appeal to your dead yard.

That answers that whether the grass is greener on the other side. Even if it isn't real. But hard to tell from a photo that is for sure.

Hi Lori,  I used to live in Orange County California,  I can identify with what is going on there.  Artificial turf may be the solution.  Let's face it, it's desert country there anyway.

Its a tough call.  We suffered through drought conditions here in FL and it was highly regulated as well.  Some folks have their own well water or fed from their lake.  We have known about the water challenge now and in the future but we keep building.

The city has a list of plants and flowers natural to our area that required less water. there are even nursery that sell different types of grass that require less water.

Curb appeal means the world but astro turf? Its plastic!

AZ has natural rock and natural plants that require less watering as well.

Lori, you have sure given an alternative, but I do think native plantings is the way to go in many locations.  That sure is distressing how the coastal region from LA to San Diego increased their water use!

Eileen, I know and I agree.  Would rather use something natural.  We just are still used to green in California.

Sharon & Bruce, I don't understand why Southern California would increase their water use in this drought!

A neighbor a few doors down from my home installed artificial turf a couple years ago.  When I drive by their home, it looks so nice compared to others, who have all but quit watering.  I am so hopeful we get significant rainfall this winter season.  We certainly need it!

And, what's up with Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Diego, that they increased their water usage by 8%???
