Owning and maintaining a house can be expensive, which is why so many homeowners choose to avoid some minor, but necessary home repairs. Yes, home maintenance and the cost of living can be a costly expense. Some fixes, however, should never be delayed. These are the things you might not be willing to undertake right away just because you lack the expertise or the money. Neglecting some maintenance or repair projects could mean expensive home insurance claims, and can result in much more expensive repairs later on, or even lead to injury and/or death.

Home inspectors around the country have said that homeowners should be on the lookout for little damages like water leaks, flickering lights and smoky chimneys. Whatever the source of a water leak, this damage can be severe. A leak can go on for a long time without being noticed. Water can cause roofs to collapse, foundations to buckle and all manner of expensive repairs. Flickering lights like smoky chimney can be very dangerous, since chimneys that aren’t properly cleaned and maintained can catch fire. Get an electrician to upgrade your wiring, add more circuits to fix flickering lights and get your chimney swept and inspected annually as well. It traditionally costs about $100, but you can possibly find it for less.

Skipping these minor repairs could wind up costing you in the long run. Remember, while your home insurance would likely cover all these claims, you’d still have to pay the deductible. So before things get worse, make a list of what you need to take care of in your home today!
