This summer, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has become the latest internet fad today after celebrities joined the bandwagon, with everyone from Oprah Winfrey to Bill Gates, to Tim Cook participating in the challenge. It’s an activity daring people across the country to post videos dropping a bucket of ice water over their heads to raise funds and awareness for ALS commonly referred as Lou Gehrig’s disease. It’s a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

It went viral throughout social media during mid-2014 and the challenge’s common stipulation is that nominated people have 24 hours to comply or forfeit by way of a charitable financial donation. Even Downtown Gainesville was not exempted from the challenge. The Regions Bank Gainesville Operations Center accepted the challenge last Wednesday, in honor of one of their employee’s family member who died from ALS complications. The center is donating $250 to the ALS Foundation and has challenged all other Region operations centers, all Regions mortgage sales groups and mortgage corporate management.

The ice bucket challenge is making waves across the world and for a good reason. The donations from these individuals will go to the research and cure of ALS. Most people do not know the reality of it and just find it as a stupid joke, while these seemingly silly antics have already raised over $41 million to fight this disease.
