Attitude of Gratitude I: Family Traditions

Just yesterday I noticed Laura Cerrano a.k.a. Ms. Feng Shui's post ActiveRain Community 5 Day Gratitude Challenge. Coincidentally I was also challenged by a dear friend via Facebook last night. I love a good challenge. This one more than others because it comes with an instant reward: an attitude of gratitude. I'm in.

DAY I

1. I'm grateful for my neighbor who came up to me this morning and gave me one big hug. Today was the 1st day of school and my little one entered Kindergarten. That hug was much needed and so appreciated. Thank you Shannon!

First Day of School, Ducketts Lane Elementary School2. I'm grateful for being able to keep family traditions alive. In Germany, every 1st grader (there is no Kindergarten grade) attends a big ceremony the weekend before the first day of school and is presented with a "sugar cone". It's actually cardboard shaped like a cone and filled with treats and presents.

My family in Germany made sure that we could participate in that tradition. Not only did they get me the "sugar cones" but also sent boxes with yummy German chocolate. It made the first day of school extra special and sweet.

3. I'm grateful for technology, Facebook and WhatsApp. Having my family half-way around the world is tough, to say the least. I remember the times when we only got to talk once a month because phone calls were so expensive. Now, pictures are shared and send in an instant, we chat for free daily which makes staying involved in everyone's lives and connected, much easier. Technology can be a curse but when it comes to my family (and business, too) it is definitely one huge blessing.

Attitude of Gratitude I.

Andrea, it is good to count our blessings every once in a while.  I think those Schultüten are unique to Germany.  Lucky school kids we were!

I love your title, Andrea.

Oh it's your first day of kindergarten. I remember that day. I felt so lonely. I hope all went well.

I teared up a little.  Seems like Abigail started kindergarten just a few short years ago.  They grow up so fast.  Glad that your family participated in the tradition.  Hug from me too.

I agree Silvia and want to keep going after the 5 days are over. I still remember my Schultuete

Summer flew by Debbie! It was a big day in my house and I am so proud of my girls. Thankfully I got plenty of work to keep me busy .. but I did take breaks, shed a tear or two and wondered how this happened so fast.

They do Tammy and I know it's going to fly by even faster now, the regular schedule, activities ... My family is awesome! Thank you!!

I am really enjoying reading all of the gratitude posts on Active Rain.  Beats the heck out of listening to the news.

Hi Andrea! I read about Laura's challenge a few days ago and I did my 5 days in the Rain. Now I'm recording my 3 things in my journal.

Isn't the power of a hug amazing?

I couldn't agree more Daniel!

Yes, Donna, the power of a hug is truly amazing! I think I'll follow your lead and continue after the 5 days are up.

Sounds like you have a great neighbor.  She knew exactly what you needed with that hug.
