Do You Know Who Your Neighbors Are?
Home selling and buying can be emotional for some while others may look at it as a business transaction. Whether the buyer is an owner occupant or an investor, they do want to know about the neighborhood. Specifically about the friendliness or lack thereof.
Know about the neighborhood?
-Who was the builder
-How many homes in the subdivision
-Percentage of owner occupants vs tenants
-Turnover rate
-Age of homes
-Price of homes
-Neighborhood
A knowledgeable local Realtor® would be able to answer pretty much all the questions except the neighbors. Are they friendly, do they hold community garage sales, do they plan community events, are they welcoming to new neighbors.
I know we are all busy with work and our personal life, however, our neighbors are the ones we see on a regular basis, they’re the ones who can actually help us if the need is there. I’ve lived in subdivisions where most knew each other, it was common to knock on each other’s door just to say hello. I’ve talked to four different homeowners today who live in different subdivisions and none of them really knew their neighbors. Why not? What is going on? Common answer is “I’m too busy”. Really? Busy to welcome someone? Even if it’s not common in your neighborhood, be the first one to start it.
We live in an area where homes are on five to ten acre land with privacy fences so we can’t just knock on someone’s door. When I first moved five years ago, I did a mailout “welcoming ME” to the neighborhood. I don’t think it’s snobby at all. I simply introduced myself, included photo of my cat(didn’t have my dog then) just in case he got lost.
I do know all my neighbors now, though we can’t knock on each other’s door, we do call each other and get together couple of times a year.
I remember having great neighbors growing up, they would bring over baked goods, knew about special events in our families, they were more than neighbors..they were cherished friends. This does take more than hitting a “Like” button, we would actually have to move on our feet and talk to each other.
