Prepping to Sell - The Kitchen

If you are preparing to sell your home, there are lots of things you can do to put the property in the best possible light. Here are The Top 5 Things You Should Do To The Kitchen When Planning to Sell.

  1. Deep Clean It! - As in all the other rooms in the house, nothing turns a prospective buyer off more than dirt and grease in the kitchen. If the appliances are staying in the house, be sure to clean everything thoroughly, both inside and out. Don't forget to clean underneath appliances that haven't been moved in a while.
  2. De-Clutter the Space - If you can't throw it away, box it up for your move. Clean out all of the cabinets as much as possible, put away or remove any appliances that don't have to be on the counter, and make the countertop space as open as possible.
  3. Walls - One of the things that deteriorates most in the kitchen are the walls. Use a critical eye (or a staging professional) to determine if your walls need to be repainted or if the tiles or wallpaper needs to be replaced. Replacing wallpaper is a project that can be accomplished without hiring someone, as is replacing tile.
  4. Cabinets - If your cabinets are falling off the hinges or the doors or drawers are off the tracks, fix them. A quick trip to Home Depot or Lowes will give you all the advice and equipment needed to handle this task (which often takes simple screw drivers and new hinges). Consider replacing door handles as well. New handles on the cabinet doors can make them look like totally different cabinets. Also, consider repainting your cabinets white. Many buyers like the idea of white cabinets because they make the room feel open.
  5. Countertops - The new rage is granite countertops. Granite makes the kitchen look modern and up-to-date. However, depending upon how much counter space you have, it can become quite pricey. An alternative is granite tile. However, there are also other alternatives to the granite countertop to consider - marble, soapstone, wood, quartz, concrete, glass, or stainless steel.

Point number one....deep clean.   In my opinion that is above all else must be done...dirty and smells will do nothing except distract buyers!

That is absolutely true, Gary. You don't want smells being what the buyer thinks about when they get back home. "Oh, that was the house that smelled like..." Not good.
