What is the Highest Spot in Austin?
Mount Bonnell is the answer. This is one of Austin's many outstanding tourist attractions and it's easy to see why. The site overlooks a stretch of the Colorado River. Very picturesque and with landscape at the summit pretty much unchanged from when it was first discovered.
As far back as the 1850s, Mount Bonnell was a spot noted for its awesome view of the surrounding area. It was a spot often selected for picnics and outings. In the 1860s, after the Civil War, General George Armstong Custer's Sixth Cavalry was headquarted in Austin. It was said that he and his wife enjoyed the view from Mount Bonnell.
If you are ever in Austin, climbing to the top of Mount Bonnell is view I think many would enjoy. As you can imagine, coming down is a bit more fun than going up.
