What is the Highest Spot in Austin? Mount Bonnell

What is the Highest Spot in Austin?

Mount Bonnell is the answer. This is one of Austin's many outstanding tourist attractions and it's easy to see why. The site overlooks a stretch of the Colorado River. Very picturesque and with landscape at the summit pretty much unchanged from when it was first discovered.

As far back as the 1850s, Mount Bonnell was a spot noted for its awesome view of the surrounding area. It was a spot often selected for picnics and outings. In the 1860s, after the Civil War, General George Armstong Custer's Sixth Cavalry was headquarted in Austin. It was said that he and his wife enjoyed the view from Mount Bonnell.

If you are ever in Austin, climbing to the top of Mount Bonnell is view I think many would enjoy. As you can imagine, coming down is a bit more fun than going up.

Hi Wayne: Is there any other way to get to the top other than climbing up? That feeling on "Top of the World" must be breathtaking.

Hi, Wayne...when I get your way, I will climb to the summit. When I was younger it use to be my goal to get to the highest point in all states. OK...so most people don't think about that, but I do. I live in Colorado and I've summitted 8 of our highest peaks.

Wayne, that video was simply lovely! Perfectly done, and the right amount of time. General Custer would be the last reason why I would want to look at it, though (I had zero respect for this man). BUT, the rest of it is a total YES!
