Was Charlton Heston a Christian?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with The Mortgage & Property Connection

Christian or not he certainly made a difference in many lives.  It's overwhelming to think how our actions and choices can affect others.  People are watching everything we do.

Several years ago I watched an infomercial where Charlton Heston spoke of his travels to the Holy Land.  He also mentioned his companion Bible.  I ordered the set immediately. I've watched the videocassettes over and over.  The beautiful scenery of the area is breath taking.

A letter from Charlton that came with the package has given me the impression that yes, he was a Christian.  I have scanned the cover of the book and the cover letter.  The cover letter is very revealing.

I did post a secular tribute to Charlton:

http://activerain.com/blogsview/456644/Charlton-Heston-Dead-at

I notice it wasn't published through Time/Warner or any other familiar TV distributors.  It was published through GT Publishing.  I wonder if he did this project personally.  That would speak volumes...

Did anyone else order this particular package, and if so, what were your thoughts?

Whether or not Heston was a Christian is his personal business and irrelevant. As a Christian, I don't judge him either way. He definitely represented popular cultures perceptions of many Bible stories. To say this is any indication of his beliefs is to also say he did not like monkeys due to his acting in the Planet of the Ape series of films. Lol

Of course it matters whether he was a Christian or not.  We can't change anything in regards to it now, but it is a question that is relevant at his passing.  I'm pretty sure he was Christian.  He and his wife stayed together for more than 60 years and she was by his side when he died.  That is very rare in the entertainment business.  He also did a lot to personally promote the Bible.

You shall know them by their fruits. Certainly Charlton Heston had the "fruits" of a Christian life.

Aside from the comments made by Israel, being a Republican does not make you a Christian.

He was a man of deep faith, compassion, loved Israel, loved people, loved to honor God's Word, and loved his Country.

That speaks volumes. Rest in peace, enter into the Joy of the Lord.

Well done thou good and faithful servant.

The only provision for anyone's salvation is Jesus Christ.  In his speech at harvard He compared Christ with Ghandi,  The question is whether he is a Christian not a moral man.  Like all of us we are sinful and in need of a Christ to save us from the wrath of God.  If a  Christian had a chance to talk to young people he would exalt Christ not good behavior.  Christ fulfilled the Righteous requirements of God and therefore we who are saved by His grace stand not on our behavior but on Christ's perfect work of the cross.

Can a good man go to heaven?  no,  Only a man or women who is saved by God;s grace.

Romans 3 verse 19 through 25.  No one will be made right with God by observing the law.  Only those who are clothed with Christ's righteousness will be saved.

I went to a large funeral  last week for the wife of a friend. There were many pastors there because the husband was a pastor so they all spoke. The last one to speak was a bishop for the district.  I reacall his words well. " The gospel is the power of God."  Likewise the power of God is in the Gospel. I have no doubt Mr. Heston is with the Lord. If he stood behind a particular Bible I am certain he believed its words.

I have a handle on your market!!!

Thank you for putting the question in front of so many people.  One thign to rememeber is that God wants a relationship with each of us individually, and allows us to have the freedom to believe what we choose to believe.  Personally, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."  I am glad the question came up as it generates the points of discussion tha may open the door for another person to make a choice to believe in something more than themselves.  As I read each of the comments, I, of course, wondered about the beliefs of each person responding.  That is the human side and the compassionate side of us.  For the most of us, we do really care about other people and that is why most of us are in the people business.  We provide a service of care that so many don't ever realize.  What a wonderful tribute to our God and it speaks volumes about the one willing to put out to the world, a question that may not be popular.  I love talking about my God and the place He has in my life.  Call me some time if you would like to share experiences, especially because it seems that we love the same God.

Speaking as a non Christian, I am forced to ask why it matters? Was he a good man? Did he do something important in his life? Did he love and take care of his family? Those are the important questions. His religion is a matter for him - although he did play a rather important Jew in his career. :)

Forgot to check to be notified of new comments.  Appearances can be deceiving folks.  I remember a show where Charlton was asked if he was a Christian and he replied something to the effect that he was a story teller.  If he was, wouldn't he have gladly replied yes?  But, then, who knows what's happened since then.  God knows.

Knowing them by their fruits

Only God's judgement on this matters.  Since you and I don't KNOW if Charleton was saved, and have no way of KNOWING it any more than if Billy Graham says he is saved (which, for the record I believe he is), let's take this discussion to a little more simple level, shall we?

Not being judgemental, but using the discernment the good Lord gave me, it would be hard to imagine a world where Charleton Heston was not a Chritian, based upon the Fruits of his Labor.  ...and for the record, I already know that works alone will not get one to heaven.  It is by Grace and through Faith alone that a man is saved.

Now, that said, for the sake of discussion, scenario 1...

Let's assume Charleton had a relationship with Jesus Christ as his personal Savior.  The way he lived his life certainly attests to it.  PERIOD.  No more discussion on this point seems relevent or neccesary.

Now, again for the sake of discussion, scenario 2...

Let's assume he was not "saved".  It would be difficult to imagine him going well beyond just being a good guy, as was pointed out, to the point where he dedicated most of his life's work to promoting Christian principles, standing up for those biblical principles in the face of much criticism, and defedning Christianity whenever the topic was brought up if he were nothing more than a good guy.  Think about it.

Just because Charleton wasn't a missionary doesn't mean he wasn't a faithful servant to Jesus Christ.  The Lord allowws us to serve in many ways.  I happen to think, by his recorded actions, that Charleton never passe dup an opportunity to bring God into the diuscussion.

...and for the record, whoever pointed out that he compared Jesus to Gandi in the speech, read into the speech a little too much I'm afraid, as he did not do that.  In fact, whomever it was that pointed out that he did was guilty of the very premise of Charleton's speech >>> taking words spoken out of context to support a personal thought or belief.

Why is it that some Chrisitans like to question the "Christianity" of others.

My pastor gave a sermon on this topic yesterday; citing several dangers in judging others because they do not live exactly as you would.

Again, only God and Charleton know if he accepted Christ as his savior, but there is NOTHING in the way he led his life that demonstrates otherwise.

Just my two cents.

Meet you on the High Ground Charleton...

 :)

God uses everyday people like you and me.  We all have our flaws and God loves us all the same...

Noah was a Drunk, Elijah was Suicidal, Peter was a Coward and liar, Jacob was a Deceiver
Rahab was a Prostitute, Samson was a Womanizer, Moses had a Self-esteem problem
David was an Adulterer/Murderer, Issac was a daydreamer,Leah was ugly, Joseph was abused, The Samaritan Woman was Divorced (a lot), Gideon was afraid, Isaiah preached naked, MARY MAGDALENE was demon possessed, Paul was too religious and a persecutor of Christians, Martha worried about everything, Jonah ran from God, Lazarus was dead    Timothy had an ulcer, Naomi was a widow, Job went bankrupt, John the baptist ate bugs and I'm sure we could go on and on...

Mary Schultz:  Hi Mary I am the one who said that Mr. Heston compared Christ to Khandi>

If you read the speech he calls Jesus and Ghandi both good leaders.  As a Christian Christ is to be exalted

and not compared in anyway to Ghandi.  Jesus is mentioned once in the speech.  To confess before thousands of young men that he is saved and Christ is the Lord of His life would have been great.

But he did not.  I know that you think I'M  judging but i did not say whether Mr.  Heston is in Heaven or Hell.  Let Christ Judge all of us according to His wisdom.  We are to discern truth from error and that is

what I'M  trying to do.

 Love in Christ.

PS:  MARY i THINK THAT WHEN WE CONSIDER THE AWESOME SACRIFICE OF THE CROSS IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF OUR THOUGHTS AND SPEECHES.  ESPECIALLY WHEN WE HAVE A CAPTIVE AUDIENCE.

THANKS AGAIN./

I've enjoyed reading everyone's comments.  Please, forgive me for being a little picky here, but I believe every mention of one great man in these posts has misspelled his name.

Mohandas Gandhi (better known as Mahatma Gandhi) was the Hindu religious leader and non-violent social reformer referred to here.  Since he is so well-known, I just think it important that his name be spelled correctly.

Just another thought:  Wouldn't it have been wonderful if he had been a Christian?

Thank you all for a lively discussion.  In conclusion  we all need to take a look at ourselves.  we will all die one day as Mr. Heston has.  I believe as a christian that this should be our number one concern.  We should be willing to share the truth of the Gospel with all those that the Lord brings into contact with us.  But we need to understand the true Gospel.  The Gospel teaches us that no man by his works will enter into the kingdom of heaven.  We also know that it is the rightiousness of Christ which has paid the penalty for our sin.  We also know that God is a jealous God and that we cannot exalt others above our Savior.  We have all broken God's law.  The Bible is revelation of Christ the redemptive plan of salvation.  If we call ourselves a Christian we should study and apply His truth contain within the pages of scripture.  We should also be willing to tell others in love when they are on the wrong track.  We should only pray to Jesus our God and not to saints or Mary or anyone else.  Let all those who love Christ  exalt Him above all.

Love in Christ

Mike

I think that there are only one person to whom it really matters if Charlton was a Christian in this life - his name is Charlton Heston.  If he was born again he is in the presence of the Lord right now.  If he was not he is eternally seperated from God.  This is not to be harsh but to make the point that we should be more concerned about the eternal destiny of the living.  They are the only ones who can choose where they spend eternity.

"...God is a jealous god."  What the....?  Are you psycho?  Robert Peck has called jealousy the greatest sin.  If God is jealous, then we are nothing more than the toy box playthings of a bored omniscient being.

I'm sorry, but the God I worship isn't that petty.  Since we're the creation of an omniscient being (God) who "indulged" us with free will, it would have been just as easy to make us puppets.  That certainly seems simpler than the drama of eternal torture for those who choose not to play by the rules.  Don't you think it's possible, instead, that the God that created us, also created a world for us to live in which we can find happiness and joy and prosperity through the right uses of our free will, which would be the greatest form of worship?  The alternative is to live in constant fear, and almost infantile claim of love, as if failing to shout your "tribute" to your master will result in harm.

"The world is fast heading into perdition.  Pray, pray, pray."  What?  So, if more of the good boys and girls pray, than bad boys and girls fornicate, we'll get world peace instead of a lump of coal in our stocking?  Seriously, this is the premise that the safety of your eternal soul is based upon?  You may want to rethink that one.

Prayer is the tool God gave us for communication.  Things like to be grateful for our blessings, seeking guidance in our expression of free will, and being happier that we spent a moment "smelling the roses".  Not for the repeated iteration of words, desperately hoping for safety of your own hide, since all those heathens out there are sending your planet down the crapper.

David,

I think you may be taking the God is a jealous God text out of context.  Remember God says that man does not see as He sees.  His ways and thoughts are higher than our own.

Please read Hosea's object lesson as he compares God's relationship with Israel in the imagery of a marriage.

The basis is love, and "jealousy" is a way to describe the love that a husband has for
a wife who is unfaithful and works as a prostitute.

This "jealousy" is one that hurts because of the unfaithfulness of the wife (Israel) in a relationship in which she had pledged herself to her husband who had loved and cared for her (God).

So when biblical writers apply this term to God, they are affirming that He, as Creator and Deliverer,
is the only God worthy of our devotion - our worship.

God's "jealousy" is not self-righteous" so that His children (we ARE His children) can worship Him and be His slaves, but so His children can live an eternal life of peace and joy and happiness that can only be found in Him.  It is for your salvation that God is jealous, not for His domination.

It is why He gave us His law of love to protect us from ourselves - our own worse enemy.

I thank God that He loves me so much and because of His love, I gladly give Him all the glory and all the praise that He deserves and am not ashamed to say that I am fully His.

God bless you all.

Sherry

I believe that no one could possible have played the parts that Heston played without being or becoming Christian.

I'm always puzzled when someone is offended because someone inquires as to another person's religious beliefs.....  Our spiritual beliefs are the most important thing about us - and something that should be known by everyone without us having to tell them. It should be that important in our lives.  I hope Charles Heston was a
Christian... I am not his judge or anyone else's - but his movie roles where so powerful and moving that you felt like you knew him personally. He was very open and outspoken about guns and politics, but once said (in regards to his religious belief) that it was a personal matter.

But we don't know. I've read that Steve McQueen became a Christian as he was dying...... I hope so. One thing for sure - someday we'll find out!

Charleton Heston's life was a living object lesson for all those who call themselves Christians.

I pray I live a life as pure as his.

It says here that Heston had been a member of St. Matthew Episcopal Church since the 1980s.
