Tall ceilings are certainly coming back around, which is great for the storage you mentioned and also for the aesthetic. New homes are great, but there's something about the history of an older one that makes it so special.

True! Pride in craftsmanship. So many extra details as well -- it's not uncommon to find stained glass and hand crafted decorative pillars "just because" in many of the older homes around here.

Signature Properties of Vermont Of course, like you I love the old architecture of the colonial era.  When we lived in Alexandria we attended a church built in 1772.  Dr.Craik, GW's physician is buried in the cemetery along with the Unknown Soldier of the Revolution.

Love the photo of the older kitchen...and yeah, I like the older homes. Although our house is not old, we have 10 foot ceilings, which I did not even notice until a much taller friend expressed envy about them.  At my height, they ALL look tall!

I can see how useful it may seem having all that space but your husband will have to reach you everything on the to shelves!  Actually my mother -in-law has a little step stool to use but she is getting a little frail so that is something to keep in mind as we get older and look for kitchens that are easily accessible.  Great question to ask, it makes for good conversation for what we want in cabinetry.

Karen, it seems that many trends that have gone "out of fashion" eventually return. Many of the newer homes in my area are now sporting 9' ceilings as a standard with 10', 12' and 18' or higher as a new trend.

Karen, I moved from a high ceiling home to a home with standard ceilings and felt a little claustrophobic in the beginning.  It's definitely nice to have that extra height.
