I'll be honest, I'm not all that up on popular culture. My oldest daughter passed away before she reached that age that required me to pay attention to it and my youngest daughter still cares more about Sesame Street, Queen Elsa, and Hello Kitty. If I hear about a young pop star it's usually for the wrong reasons, see Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, etc. Up until now my knowledge of Taylor swift was, A) What Kanye West pulled on her at some awards show and B) There's a really funny dash cam video of an overweight police officer dancing in his car to her song "Shake it Off". Yep, that's it. Call me old, I don't care. Today that changed a little bit when I found out what she did for a little girl from Queen Creek, AZ that has recently been diagnosed with the same awful disease that took my Abby.
Naomi is an 11 year old girl who much like Abby was your normal, happy and healthy kid. This Christmas she was surprised with tickets to the August 18th Taylor Swift concert in Phoenix. However, she was recently diagnosed with AML, a very aggressive Leukemia. The treatment for AML requires the kids immune systems to be so supressed that they have to stay in the HIP (Highly Immunocompromised Protection) unit of the hospital for literally 30-45 days at a time. They get a 7-10 day break at home between rounds of chemo, but due to their compromised immune system they really shouldn't even leave the house. This means little Namoi was going to have to miss the August 18th Taylor Swift show. This as much as anything else was devastating to her as she was anxiously looking forward to it. Her parents took to Twitter and YouTube with a message for Ms. Swift in hopes that it would reach her. It did and she responded in a huge way:
Not only did she take the time to reach out with a note to Naomi, she donated $50,000 to her Go Fund Me page. I'd be willing to bet that WHEN Naomi recovers Ms. Swift will do something special for her then as well. So thank you Taylor for helping this family and for restoring my faith in the entertainment industry. I wish there were 10 Taylor Swifts for every Miley Cyrus, etc. instead of the other way around.
