Realtors Who Door Knock-Masochists or Motivated?

Let me start off by saying that I am one of those pesky Realtors that door knock. I on average door knock  3-5 days a week for about 4 hours each time. There are some days where I have some really great conversations and other days where I come across some people that I cannot help but feel sorry for the person they are married to if a wide eyed girl knocking on their door, bearing real estate information is enough to set them off, I can only imagine the eggshells that person has to walk on in that household.

I recently came across a facebook post that was talking about the No Soliciting signs and do they work to keep people from knocking on their door?  To answer that question plain and simple.. NO... A no solicting sign will not stop people from knocking on your door and it will not stop people from leaving pamplets on your door. I personally do not knock on a person's door if there is a no soliciting sign, I just leave a little brochure and be on my way. I cannot speak for other people in the real estate industry as a whole, because some disregard the sign and knock while some will creep to your side yard if they hear people in the backyard playing, convinced someone is home, even if nobody answers (that last one is taking it a bit too far, even I would be creeped out by that).

So if a Realtor knocks on your door what should you do? Just be polite, pay attention to how the Realtor is behaving, if they are being respectful of your time, honoring the fact that you are not in the market to buy or sell a home at this point in your life and not holding you up after giving their brief introduction, take their contact information and send them on their way. As an avid door knocker, I prefer that. I don't want to hold you at the door, you don't know me, but I still want to introduce myself to you and see if you have any real estate goals in the near future that I may be able to asssit you with. If the answer is not at this time, no problem, here is my information if you circumstances change please give me a call, have a great day and I'm on to the next door.

Please keep in mind, not all Realtors are like me. If you have a chatty Cathy at the door that doesn't take your anti-social ques of already being uncomfortable with answering a door to a stranger, expressing no interest in anything involving real estate and they are still wanting to stand there and talk to you... You may have to get a little bit more aggressive with those types and just tell them, I'm not interested, thank you for your time, buh-bye! Let that be that, sometimes closing the door on them is the only way for the chatty Cathys to take the hint that you are not interested.

If I am thinking about selling my home, should I consider using a Realtor that knocks on my door?

Yes you should! Look for the ones that have consistantly come to your door more then once. They are the ones that are going to know your neighborhood and area better then anyone else. They are going to know your neighbors and the community. Those pesky Realtors that knock on your door consistantly every month are going to be the ones that know the highest dollar amount you are going to get for you home and they know enough about the community where they know where they are going to find the buyer. Sure you may know a Realtor in your Bunco group that drinks excessive amounts of wine and talks about everyone's buisness, if you want your personal business to be topic of conversation for the next bunco night, hire her. Or you may even have a co-worker that just happens to have a real estate license and would love the chance to dabble in it a bit despite their limited education or knowledge of the contracts, processes and procedures of the business. If you prefer to make your largest assett someone's guinea pig, good luck with that.

If you acknowledge the fact that your house is in fact your largest assett and you deserve to best outcome that makes you the most profit possible, then hire a professional, that is what you and your family deserve. The best professional for the job is the one that is consistantly knocking on your door every month sharing community stats, market updates, upcoming events and their smile, no matter how many doors where slammed in their face prior to coming to your door.

Realtors that knock on your door every month, I wouldn't say they are masochists, me personally, I don't so much enjoy pain or taking a verbal beating, but I am motivated and willing to go through that pain if it means talking to a few great people in the community, building relationships and familarilty while conveying myself as the area expert and eventually helping some people get the best price for their home because I know their area better anyone else.

So next time a pesky Realtor knocks on your door, just take their information, be polite, even if you are not looking to sell anytime soon. Gage to see who is coming back every month, those that are at your door every month, are the ones that are worth talking to about getting top dollar for your home.
