TripAdvisor either was generous to DC last week or really insulted us when it ranked D.C. as the sixth-best city in the country for pizza.
TripAdvisor ranked us behind New York, Chicago, New Haven, San Francisco and ORLANDO (???). I understand New York, Chicago and New Haven (although I have trouble with clams on my pizza.) The North Beach section of San Francisco has great Italian food too so it probably has great pizza, but Orlando throws me for a loop! Sorry to all my AR friends in Florida.
The favorite pizza restaurants in DC that put us in sixth place were - We the Pizza, Matchbox Pizza, and Pizzeria Paradiso as top places - and yes, they are great! My favorite at Matchbox (a non-chain feeling chain of restaurants all around DC) is the prosciutto and black mission fig pizza and at Pizzeria Paradiso near Dupont Circle or in Georgetown, it has to be the Four Cheese with gorgonzola, pecorino, fontina, mozzarella, minced garlic and parsley. Of course anything with gorgonzola is a hit with me. At We the Pizza, down on Capitol Hill, don't miss the Forest Shroomin' Pie with Wild Forest mushrooms, truffles, mozzarella, fresh thyme, and parmesan.
If we were sixth best in the country, there had to be places that we were better than - and there were - Las Vegas, San Diego, Phoenix, and Miami Beach all ranked below us!
According to TripAdvisor, the ranking was based on three factors: the quality of pizza restaurant reviews; the quantity of pizza joints (and their reviews); and "the ratio of pizza restaurants and reviews compared to all restaurants for the city."
FYI - the top pizza restaurants in the country, as ranked by TripAdvisor, did not include any in or around D.C.
If you are in the Maryland suburbs, and looking for a great pizza restaurant in Bethesda, I would try Mia's, which I wrote about last fall. Mia's is just a short walk from great neighborhoods like Kenwood Forest and Edgemoor.
