Painting Solutions to 5 Common House Paint Problems on Cape Cod.

Painting Solutions to 5 Common Paint Problems. Number 1. Paul Dunn, Paint Division Manager for Cape Associates, and I were having a breakfast meeting and I asked him what he thinks common painting problems on Cape Cod are. He said there are 5 areas that are problematic on Cape Cod. This is the first one.

The first is water - in his opinion. Of course this resonated with me, because Cape Cod is virtually an Island. For example the town of Falmouth MA has more waterfront property than any other town in the US.

When you see bubbling or peeling paint on the exterior of a property, you could be seeing the results of poor preparation by the painter and it quite often means that water has affected the paint. Professional painters who are experienced in painting high moisture environments issues, say the way to avoid this is to use a moisture meter. If the exterior trim is within tolerance levels of moisture, painting can progress.

Having a high level of moisture in a painted item will keep paint from adhering to it. Once the bubbling and/or peeling starts, the area must be sanded, or power washed and dried to re-prepare the area for proper painting. Experienced painters know this and use a moisture meter.

Inside a property, using a moisture meter can also help identify and locate leaks that may need repair before painting. Staining or buckling plaster are signs of moisture and leaks. Efflorescence is a white power-like crystalline growth that is another moisture indicator. However, the leak may be traveling to those locations and may only be visible in the spot where it makes it through the plaster or sheet-rock.

Each water issue must be identified, understood, and addressed in order to have your paint last the longest and look the best for the most years. Having an experienced professional assess the problems will make a big difference in how successful the remedy is - and in how long your paint lasts. I rely on Paul Dunn's experience as a painter for useful information about moisture and paint on Cape Cod.

I had no idea about Falmouth, MA  having the most waterfront property than any other town in the U.S. I have been there and it's beautiful.
