Live Where You Train: Carlsbad CA Is The Pinnacle For Triathlon Training

Wouldn't you love to live where you train? Carlsbad is the pinnacle for triathlon training, swimming, cycling and running, on the west coast for a number of reasons. First we've got some tremendous hills. If you're a cyclist (don't call them bikers!) there are a number of clubs to join, and the coastal routes are fairly flat and in good shape. There are bike lanes everywhere in North San Diego County. You can also practice off road throughout Carlsbad and San Marcos if you like to train with your mountain bike. If you are up for a challenge, there is a ridiculous hill section when you leave La Costa and head up to Double Peak in San Marcos, you'll gain some crazy elevation in about 5 miles. If you're a runner you can train HILLS on the trails or run along sections of the coast that feature flat roads or narrow cliff side trails or the boardwalk right on the sand. Lots of variety makes training a little easier--at least for fighting boredom. Second, the ocean is clean and perfect for your swim training whether you just jump right in and swim up and down the coast or jump in and swim to a buoy and back. There are also some great community pools to train for your swim. Alga Norte Park has an incredible aquatics center. You'll definitely want a wet suit for your open water swims. Our water is cooled by the Alaskan Current and our family in Maine gets a kick out of the fact that our water is about the same temperature as theirs. Brrr! Late July and August are about the only months I see my wife brave the cold water sans wetsuit, unless we have a nice tropical storm that brings in some warmer water. Carlsbad is wonderful for serious off season training because of the weather. It's usually in the 70's and sunny for the majority of the year and even in summer it doesn't stay above 90 for more than a few weeks. You can get your elevation training without having to endure winter climates.  CLICK HERE to view homes and condos for sale in Carlsbad, CACLICK HERE for homes and condos with a Water View

The training and athletic culture is supported by a lot of the local businesses throughout Carlsbad. This is a very health conscious area. There's an overall sense of well being and healthfulness which is noticeable even when driving around. People are out running, cycling, swimming, surfing or playing volleyball every day of the year. This is an inspiring environment to be around, especially if you're a professional. Along those lines, there are many Farmer's Markets and Juice Bars scattered throughout this area, as well as restaurants serving organic, locally grown food. And lots of breweries! Because, well, an ice cold craft beer after a brutal bike ride just feels good. (Please drink responsibly.)  Man, we love living here!!

Here is some info on a couple of the most popular races in Carlsbad:

The Carlsbad Triathlon is one of the nation's longest running triathlons. It's for beginners and professionals. It is a sprint distance race, consisting of a 1K open water ocean Swim, which is well marked with buoys, followed by a 25K Bike and a 5K Run. The roads are wide and closed to traffic—very safe! The course is mostly flat with a couple of rolling areas.

The course begins at Tamarack Surf Beach and follows the coastline of Carlsbad, past our scenic beaches, lagoons and wildlife preserve. It boasts an ocean swim, a rolling bike course and a smooth run for the finish. The Carlsbad 5000 is in April and usually draws a huge crowd of participants and spectators alike. It's a Rock N' Roll signature event so a lot of people run. It's the fastest 5K and it's mostly along the ocean, very flat and it ends with beers at Pizza Port. What could be better?? : )
