New Year's Eve Good-Luck customs
Southerners are very superstitious if they don't eat black-eyed-peas and greens on New Years Day? When I was a young boy our family tradition on New Year's Eve dinner was black-eyed-peas and cabbage.
Southerners from the south believe eating black-eyed-peas on News Year Day is thought to bring prosperity to the New Year. Our greens was cabbage or turnip greens for wealth and good health.
Tradition has it that the custom came about during the Civil War when the Union troops stripped the countryside of all stored food, crops, and livestock. Northerners considered fields of corn and peas only suitable for livestock and did not steal or destroy the crops.
Southerners discovered if they added pork or ham to the black-eye-peas it added flavor and they would also serve collard greens. Today many of serve cabbage, mustard greens or turnip greens to symbolize money and the peas symbolize prosperity since they swell when cooked.
If you're looking for more prosperity and good fortune try a big bowl of black eye peas and helping of cabbage or collards.
