Memories Take Us Back, Dreams Take Us Forward

I watched  a movie the other day with Robert Duvall where he told a story about a man with little material things but what the man looked forward to every week.  It got me thinking about what I look forward to and how often I am looking back at things in the past.  Often I catch myself saying "If only I had done this" or "If only I had made that choice".  Striving to be happy we need to be looking forward not dwelling on the past things that happened that we had little or no control over and can never change.

We should be like children, so innocent and pure.  A child looks forward to their Mother's face when they wake up from a nap.  They look forward to their birthdays, Christmas and the last day of school.

We look forward to our wedding day, our new life.  Making a home, raising a family.  And little things; special weekend trips, a favorite movie coming out, visits from a dear friend or your daughter coming home from college.

As we age we should strive to look forward.  Just because we are retired or empty nesters doesn't mean we have nothing to look forward to.  Be involved; try something you have  always wanted to do.   Travel, learn a new hobby or craft, reconnect with old friends.

The last few years I have taken up quilting.  My grandmother quilted her whole life.  It has become a passion for me.  Also I got involved in genealogy.  I have traced my family tree all the way back to the American Revolution!  I have submitted my application to the DAR - Daughters of the American Revolution.  I look forward to new discoveries in my family tree.  I think about what my ancestors looked forward to.  It must have been an exciting time.

Looking forward to what opportunities we have is a big part of reaching our goals.  We are all reminded each year to be successful we must have goals and a plan to reach them.  If we are constantly looking back it only sets us back.  Looking forward to the smallest parts of our day makes that day more enjoyable, makes you appreciate what you have.  It lowers your stress level and helps you have a better relationship with everyone around you.

Have a great Tuesday.

Gay, this is a lovely post.  I think that a lot of us are going to relate completely to the idea of pulling away from our fixation on the good old days.
