#DSTRONG Dorian Murray…. You are Famous in Homer Alaska
A friend of mine who lives in Westerly Rhode Island told me about an 8 year old boy, Dorian Murray who has terminal cancer. Dorian has fought the fight and remained strong and fierce in the face of this disease but now there is no more they can do. Dorian decided he wanted to be famous before he goes to heaven. Word is out and people across the world have taken up the #DSTRONG cause to make sure he is known across the world, even China!
I asked the 6th grade class of Fireweed Academy if they would like to help Dorian. They far exceeded what I thought they would do. They really thought about it and watched the news stories and listened to Dorian. They decided they should get someone famous from Homer to help them show Dorian he is famous in Alaska. They decided that person would be Captain Jonathan Hillstrand. Captain Jonathan and his family own the Time Bandit, crabbing boat featured on the Discovery Channel TV show Deadliest Catch.
When approached Captain Johnathan didn’t hesitate. He said yes and when? We scheduled a time and the kids made a beautiful sign. They really put a lot of thought and creativity in their planning. They found out what Dorian liked, stuff like poke man so they put them on the sign. They found a picture of Jonathan and the Time Bandit and placed it in a prominent spot. Johnathan brought a couple of his books he has written and illustrated.
He signed the books and so did all the kids. We are sending the books to Dorian.
I am so proud of these Fireweed Kids. They are always raising money for the trip with all kinds of innovative tactics, so I had offered them money for their 6th grade trip. Today I went to their Teacher and told her I would get the check to her. She said “No, the class wants the money to go to Dorian or to cancer research.” Several of the kids echoed this and said can you send it straight to Dorian? I was really touched by their sincere kindness. We will be donating straight to Dorian Murray.
