Sandpoint's Dog Beach soon to be underwater

As we head into spring and summer months Lake Pend Oreille is brought back to its higher levels.  This will cover most of Dog Beach that shows during the fall and winter months.  Dog Beach being to the Northeast of the Long Bridge as you head north from Sagle.  This photo is to the east side of the RR tracks, and looking north,  which will soon be 6 to 8 feet under Lake Pend Oreille waters.

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint  Does this happen every year or is this happening because of climate change

Hello Hannah Williams ,  The down river damns drain off the Lake 10 to 12 feet every fall in preparation of the winter and spring runoff.  I am going to make a point of getting some stats this year.  Lake Pend Oreille is the largest lake in Idaho.  Can you imagine the volumn of 10 to 12 feet depth? not shoreline!  I am sure the numbers will be staggering.  Thank you for stopping by.  I trust you enjoyed your Awards and personal favorites did well.  Believe it or not I still have not even seen who or what won.  Mark

Hello Endre,  I know you could.  Sounds as though the Sierra's have at least been getting some snow this year.  Mark

She has come a long ways Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905 .  These are the tracks than a few short months after having here she was chasing birds.  They were low flying and turned.  I did not realize till too late she was on the tracks and not knowing which way to go with the train bearing down on her.  Honking its horn was doing more harm than good.  Too far away all I could do was watch.  So close did the train come that I lost sight of her to the front of the engine.  I had to make that same walk I made today fearing the worst for what I would find.  We met at the trestle and like any good parent so ascared was I that I scolded her.  What an ass.  She took only a few stitches in her front leg.  Only she will know what happened but I believe as she jumped at the last minute the front end brused her and threw her off balance.  Needless to say I need not worry about her being on train tracks anymore.  For months she would crawl to the front seat, and hide on the passenger floor if an RV was behind us.  Needless to say even a Semi passing on the street while walking would have her cower.  No longer.  Hell of a spirited gal.

As a California gal, who has witnessed how low our lake levels went down during the drought here, it would feel reassuring to witness the lake rise again.

Fascininating that the lake undergoes these changes each year. That's a lot of water! Sounds like they have a good system in place. We could use some more rising levels in the lakes and reservoirs, although reports are that things have improved, with more rain due in Northern California this weekend

Mark, When the lake is at low levels the dog beach exists and when the lake is normal then this part of the beach is underwater? Interesting stuff. How is the weather in Idaho?
