Wesley Snipes Jailed For Not Paying Taxes?!?!

By
Real Estate Agent with Century 21 Fusion

Please give me your thoughts on this, but when I hear this I think it is absurd. Murderers and rapists have been known to spend less time in jail and he is being sentenced for THREE YEARS for not paying his taxes. I know that some people call this stealing and I don't disagree, but at the same time the government always knows how to get their money and can keep track of how much he owes, it isn't like he ran off with it, so I don't agree with the sentence handed out to him. I think the jails need to be reserved for the real criminals out there, or at least the ones that endanger the rest of us. Give him a fine, make him pay double to set a precedent. I think that would serve him and the public much better than by using the taxes he failed to pay to feed and put a roof over his head! I am interested to hear anyone else's thoughts on that as maybe it is my Canadian ignorance, but I just don't see the point when there are far worse criminals out there who are running free.

I think he needs to pay the taxes that are due.  Maybe a couple of months but you have to realize the ones freeing the hard core criminals are the liberals who believe in taxes and government.

I definitely agree with you Kari.  This is the first I'm hearing about this.  Shame on Wesley for not paying taxes but 3 years????  I think child molesters get less than that.  It's a great idea to double the fine.

Hi Kari,

Wesley got what he deserved in this case. He didn't try to cheat on his taxes, he simply said the tax laws don't apply to him. Look up the facts, this guy may be famous & a multi-millionaire, but he thumbed his nose at the IRS & Feds for years. Now while I understand your reaction & others to a point, remember this tax money pays for schools, hospitals, teachers, poilce, fire dept, etc. Now while you & I don't make millions [at least I don't] imagine if we & a few million other people said we just weren't going to pay taxes any more. We wouldn't get away with it & especially someone making MILLIONS was not going to get away with defrauding the government. The fact he hired 2 crooks to represent him with the IRS says a lot as well. They are also going to jail for a number of charges including conspiracy to defraud.

Garnish his next movie earnings to get what he owes (taxes, fees, penalties, and court costs)...allow him to make more taxable income (providing more revenue) ...instead of costing the average tax payers money for his incarceration.  Sending him to jail just goes to show what is wrong with our legal system.

For those of you seeking knowledge, income tax is an excise tax.  The Constitution does not allow for excise taxes and the law that created the Internal Revenue Code (16th Amendment) did not give the government any additional taxing power according to the Supreme Court.  If there is no additional power for the IRC to tax incomes then where does it get the authority jail someone for failing to file/pay?

Just an opinion and I am not advising anyone on how to handle their taxes.

But here are a few of websites/articles where you can read about the LAW.  It is very enlightening reading.

Lost Horizons   We the people  Free Republic

Again, I am not advising anyone how to handle their taxes as that could be considered illegal.

I got to admit I was rooting for snipes to get off because I hate paying those guys too.  What even worse is that they've lost my return for the second time in 3 years and are making threats for big bucks.  On the flipside, if they owed me money, I can't receive it at this point.
