Chances R and Wimpy's Ask Geoffrey

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker 475.140531

As a kid I remember going to the Chances R and eating peanuts from the shell. You would then throw those shells on the floor. In the late 1960's my parents used to take us to the Old Town location. I have found memories of those Sunday dinners.

I also remember in the middle 1960's my grandparents took me to eat at Wimpy's in downtown Chicago. I always wondered what happened to these restaurants until now. It is time for another session of our favorite "Ask Geoffrey".

I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did and elect to invest 8 minutes with me.

Chances R in Old Town 1960's

Chances-R

The Champaign location was a popular music venue and hangout for University of Illinois students. Acts like REO Speedwagon and a young man from New Jersey you might have heard of named Bruce Springsteen performed there.

Noah: We have a steak place in town where throwing peanut shells on the ground is not only allowed, it is expected.

The equivalent of Chances R to us here in CT was a place called Toad's in New Haven and all the big names played there often unannounced.  Being this close to New York carried some benefits.  The Beatles were there etc

The grand kids like to go out for luck or and eat peanut and throw the shells on the  floor . . . . Somethings never change.

Good luck and success.

That was a fun "Ask Geoffrey's" segment! I just love these two guys. They make a great team and they make it fun to learn about the history/nostalgia of good old Chicago!

I was a fan of Wimpy's! It was such a rare treat to get something like that because my mom practically lived in the kitchen and cooked all our meals.

Good morning Noah.  We still have a couple of those places around here.  The food, outstanding, the peanuts is just a plus to either start or end a meal

Hi Noah -- you know I enjoy "Ask Geoffrey" so thank you for another edition.  I believe Endre Barath, Jr. might be referring to Gladstone's in Pacific Palisades.

Hi Noah Seidenberg - I watched the whole segment. Reo Speedwagon and Bruce Springsteen ...WOW! I asked my husband if he remembered Wimpy's.  He was too busy getting White Castle Hamburgers any chance he could!  When I lived in SoCal we had a chain called Northwoods Inn, set up like mountain chalets where you could throw peanuts on the floor. You could get the best lobster, cheesbread, and salads there!

I wonder if Sheila Anderson saw any of the Wimpy's in her visit to Kenya. He said they are tons of them in South Africa so they may have migrated north.

Both places sound very nice, unfortunately, I never got to visit either of them, I guess they were before my time.

Noah, we use to have a restaurant like that around here about 20 years ago.  I wish someone would open up another one.

Really neat photos to accompany your great memories, Noah.  We had a place here in Sacramento that I was fond of that allowed for eating peanuts while tossing the shells on the floor.  I loved the place!

We have a place here known as Texas Roadhouse where the peanuts land on the floors too, even though they hand you an empty basket when you are seated.

Some things like peanuts on the floor and a love for burgers never change, Noah Seidenberg ... but the prices of eating them surely has.  15 cents!  I'm happy to say I'm old enough to remember those days too ... well, happy in one way ...
