What I love about my job, an ActiveRain Contest

One of the February contests for ActiveRain bloggers is to write about what we love about our job. After 30 years of owning and managing real estate companies and other businesses, Dolores and I moved from Virginia Beach, Virginia to Maryland to be with family members and I had intended to find a position as a fund raiser in the non-profit sector. I was unable to find a position and began a new career as an associate broker in Maryland where I knew nobody in the business and had no business contacts. That change lead to an additional and successful twenty year career in real estate before I decided to retire. So, my current job is retirement and the challenge of staying in good health and finding activities that we enjoy.

The benefit of my current position is that I can do whatever I want to do and no longer have the challenges of running a profitable business. I is easy to love this opportunity. I had not intended to write a blog for this contest and this is the last day of the month. We have a beautiful day in Maryland and Dolores is on the golf course as I write this blog. It would be foolish not to love the good life that we enjoy.

I opened my first real estate office in the summer of 1961 after finishing law school at the University of Virgina. Finance was my major during my undergraduate work in the School of Commerce at UVA. I went into the real estate business to take advantage of the business and career opportunities and loved what I was doing. Dolores and I met in 1965 and I was fortunate to marry the best wife in the world. She has assured a lovely life for me for over over 51 years.

Some of the side benefits of the real estate business are the opportunities to have leadership roles in community and industry organizations. Those positions have provided as much enjoyment as the businesses that enabled those opportunities. We have traveled extensively over the years and Dolores, too, has held several important positions.

Now, as we enjoy our senior years, we like to take lots of day trips and to enjoy local and regional activities. Dolores has her golf interests and my hobby is photography.

If you are looking for a helpful message in this blog. I will share a bit of advice. Enjoy what you do even when you face unanticipated challenges. Save the funds that you will need for a comfortable retirement and understand that it may require more than you think. Enjoy life and give yourself the opportunity to love every day.

Good morning again Roy. I really enjoyed this and your advice is wonderful. You went to law school but never practiced?

That is correct. I opened a real estate office rather than a law office.

Roy,

You have had the best of many worlds and clearly, the best is with Dolores. Your marriage was truly made in Heaven! I wish you both good health, happiness and many days to enjoy all the joys of life doing what you both like to do whenever you're up to it!

I'm glad you participated in this contest. It was a good reading!

Roy Kelley - Today sounds like another good reason to cuddle up with a good book. I hope the winds blow away quickly.

We have a red sky in Maryland this morning and a winter storm warning is posted for tonight and Tuesday. Today is the time for residents to prepare for heavy snow conditions for a couple of days. The cold weather may also impact the cherry blossoms on the area.

It is sometimes a good practice to visit old blogs and reblogs. We might even find some good ideas for current posts.
