A good phrase to avoid

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Marte Cliff Copywriting

Whether you're talking with your spouse, your child, your best friend, your boss, or a real estate prospect or client, there's a phrase you could do well to avoid.

What is it?

"I didn't get a chance to..."Pinnochio

You might get away with it if someone made a request of you within the last hour or so and you've been in a meeting with a client or tied up on the phone.

But if you promised to do something yesterday - or last week - and you still haven't done it, the person you're speaking with will probably (correctly) interpret "I didn't get a chance to..." as "I didn't take time  to..." or worse, "I didn't bother to..."

Granted, if the request was for something that would take a whole day, you might be trying and simply not finding time to do it.

But usually, that's not the case. Quite often, it's something that would take an hour at most.

And you know - if you wanted to get it done, you could have "gotten a chance" to do it. You might have to skip a TV show or stay up later than you like, but if it was important to you, it would have gotten done.

What's the cure? Learn to say no.

People may feel cross at you for refusing some unwanted task, but they'll be a lot less cross if you say no than they will if you say yes and then don't get it done - especially if you come up with the highly insulting "Didn't get a chance" excuse.

Or - if it's something you really must do for a client, just do it!

Good morning, Marte!

So very true.  We all tend to be busy, but that should not be an excuse.  If it is promised, then follow through.  Yes, some things may be time consuming, but then keep the person informed as to the progress.  I  know there are times I have to check with the local zoning office, for instance, about something and they may be out of the office or on vacation, let's say.  Then let the person know so that they are not left wondering and hanging.

Absolutely, Brigita McKelvie, Associate Broker - Some things can't be done in ten minutes, and some things can't be done outside of business hours. In that case, tell people what's holding up progress.

Good morning Marte Cliff, when I was young, I would take on way too much but somehow managed to get it done. I've learned to say "no", wasn't easy but feels so good. We will always have time for things that are important to us.

Jul 13, 2017 08:14 AM
Marte Cliff

I agree, Beth Atalay - We're always making choices about what we're doing. Granted, sometimes there seems to be no choice - we have to do whatever is in front of us. But barring extreme/emergency circumstances, we have a few hours each day to do whatever we choose. There's no such thing as "not having a chance," especially when it's a ten minute task.

Just do it! If you say you are going to do it, it's best to keep your word. Should go without saying, but unfortunately it needs saying!

Sharon Tara When I hear that phrase I always want to say "Be honest. Tell me you didn't feel like it, didn't want to do it, or just didn't take the time."

We are all in control of our time and make choices what we do with it. If I don't get something done, it is because I didn't plan well.

I agree Debbie Reynolds - although there are times when we alter our plans to suit our clients - then have to carve out time later to finish the planned tasks.

Dear Marte,

Say no or apologize. I recently had the flu & was in no condition to talk to anyone or do much of anything else. Luckily, these things tend to pass quickly, so we can get back at it & say sorry to the people we were unable to serve in the manner they deserve.

Yes, Dörte Engel, illness does occasionally get in the way. In that case it was not because you "didn't have a chance to..." It was because you were "too ill to..."

Yes Nick & Trudy Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - it's those small tasks that don't get done that are the puzzle. Why not just do them?

Good post, Marte!

Reminds me of the song Promises, Promises by Naked Eyes group.
Don't promise more than you can deliver. Keep a "To Do List" so you don't forget your important tasks for the day. We all have our plates pretty full as Realtors. Have a nice weekend everyone!

I'm guilty of using this phrase. When it pertains to a client request, I will follow it up with " and I plan to take care of that -----" and name a specific time frame.

Jul 15, 2017 12:09 PM
Marte Cliff

Mary Hutchison, SRES, ABR - I think it's the "get a chance" part that rankles me, especially when it's something that would take less than ten minutes and can be done any time of the day or night.

Following up with a specific promise would likely counter the annoyance factor.

Marte, I got called out saying "I didn't get a chance to" by a client and friend early on in my career. He said what you said, "that was Monday and it's now Friday, wtf have you been doing Kevin?" at that moment I realized I just screwed up and did not give it the attention it needed, which honestly was only a couple of minutes. I learned a valuable lesson in that moment. Great post!

Kevin Ray That was a good lesson to learn early on - and from someone who would call you on it and not just drop you like a hot potato.
