Welcome to my BLOG about the area where I live and work...San Luis Obispo County. Let's start with the City of San Luis Obispo.
Located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the city of San Luis Obispo is the cultural and commercial hub of California's beautiful Central Coast. San Luis Obispo, or "San Luis" as it is sometimes refered to by the locals, is the county seat and the most populated city at about 45,000. It's award winning downtown is always full of people enjoying the tree cover streets lined with interesting shops and wonderful restaurants. Of course we have the famous Thursday Night Farmer's Market, when Higuera Street is closed to cars and we shop for local produce, listen to bands play, eat great food on the street, visit the local shops that stay open for the occasion and just stroll. I almost always see someone I know when I walk downtown. People here have an easy friendliness and often say hello just because.
The early inhabitants of San Luis Obispo were the Chumash Indians. Other European explorers came and went, then in 1772, Father Junipero Serra established the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, California's fifth in the chain. "The Mission" and its surrounding grounds is now a community area where many public activities and festivals happen. From Santa's House at Christmas to Children's Day in the Plaza, to the renouned chalk painting of the I Madonnari Festival, to our weekly summer dance Concerts in the Plaza, our town's heart is at the Mission Plaza.
Contributing to the more urban feel of San Luis Obispo is our two colleges; California Polytechnic State University, known as Cal Poly, and Cuesta College, our junior college. With the college influence, there is widely varied cultural opportunity. From symphony at the 91,500 sq ft Performing Arts Center at Cal Poly to downtown clubbing, there is always a lot going on around here.
The weather is almost perfect for being outside for about 10 months out of the year, and for the other two you just have to put on a jacket! Hiking, biking and exploring the trails and the parks throughout the county make outdoor enthusiasts feel right at home.
Housing prices vary with location and type of property. If you are looking for a luxurious home at the edge of town on a large lot, expect to pay well over $1M. To get a comfortable student rental (3 bedroom, 2 bath) within 2 miles of Cal Poly, expect to pay an average of $625,000, unless you want to buy right near the college, then expect to pay at least $725,000. If you want to purchase a home near the downtown area, expect to pay from $650,000 for a small house. Newer track homes at the south edge of town average about $750,000 and up. We also have a gated community known as San Luis Country Club where homes are $1M and up. Please call me to get more specific information on neighborhoods.
