- Your Lakes Region NH Weather Report, DATE, 2017 -

BRAKE FOR MOOSE

73-75℉ Partly Cloudy Rain 52

GOOD MORNING FROM THE BEAUTIFUL LAKES REGION OF NEW HAMPSHIRE - Here's your weather summary for Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017 -

No doubt about it, we've got Semtember weather in August.  Today is no exception, say forecasters, who are calling for another pleasant day under mostly sunny skies with a high temperature ranging from 73-75°.

Wind will be out of the west to 9 MPH, gusting to 16 MPH.

The early autumn-like temperature is about 7° below normal for the period as the Jet Stream continutes to pull cooler Canadian air south, blanketing the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the country.

Expect skies to clear tonight with a low down to about 52° and light wind out of the west northwest at about 6 MPH.

The weather is still warm enough for water activities, but consider packing everyone instead into the car and heading north.  How about a great day of shopping in North Conway or a leisurely drive over one of the state's scenic routes in the White Mountains?  Today's the day for it but exercise caution when driving at higher speeds, warn officials of New Hampshire Department of Fish and Game.  Moose are out and they are no respecters of automobiles.

New Hampshire is famous for its moose, but these massive mammals average 1,000 pounds and are hard to spot, especially if one is not on the lookout for them.  There are numerous collisions each year with dozens of injuries to passengers and drivers, some of which result in death.  Fish and Game officials and law enforcemenet urge all drivers to use caution when on the roads, especially at dusk and dawn.   Here are some tips to keep in mind, when driving in New Hampshire:

1. Moose are everywhere in the state, but are known to cross roads in specific areas. Always pay attention to your driving but pay special attention to to it and the highway corridor whenever your encounter a yellow BRAKE FOR MOOSE sign.  If the sign says, "next 6 miles",  believe it. It's posted for a reason.

2. Moose collisions coorelate positively with vehicular speed, officials warn.  Do not exceed 55 MPH, especially in posted moose zones.

3. Wear seatbelts at all times.

4. Pay attention to shoulders and the areas just beyond them.  If you see a moose, don't count on it staying put. These large animals are unpredictdable.  Slow until you are certain of safe passage or stop entirely and let the animal cross the road.

5. When driving at night, use high beams whenever there is no oncoming traffic, but remember that brown/black moose fur absorbs light.  Plus the animals are tall and headlights may only illuminate their legs, which are hard to see.

If you're traveling at night, Moose may be out and near the highway.  Skies are expected to clear tonight, but its no guarantee you'll spot these amazing creatures.   Use care and stay safe. We want you coming back for many years to come.

Sunrise/Sunset (Laconia): 6:01 a.m. - 7:34 p.m.
