Is There An App For A Real Estate Agent?

Agent App PictureDiscussions with in particular one demographic group can be fascinating. One such topic involves many apps, or applications on the current myriad of smartphones and tablet computers connected with high speed internet access wirelessly. They say, you real estate agents will all be gone by say the year 2020. Why? There will be an app for that. Not so fast Jason or Amanda there. While there are apps for better searching for properties, they do not realize real estate has gotten more COMPLICATED.

Each year, contracts get more involved, detailed, longer and new contracts. Mortgage programs change the rules, add/delete programs, and what about the resources of appraisers, inspectors, handymen, title companies, attorneys, federal regulations that change, it is far more complex than five or ten years ago. Going through the process involves tremendous PEOPLE skills. Something that is not in an app, with negotiating, phone follow-up, making appointments, opening doors, installing signs, even that 20th century leftover dinosaur the open house. While there ARE some companies bordering on deception with their radio advertisements of "getting rid of the hassle" and selling your home quickly, between the lines often their commissions may be double an agent commission and they do not offer the higher net sale proceeds a traditional agent does. Everything that glitters is not gold. Let the buyer beware.

Will there be a one push button APP that is in essence a VIRTUAL real estate agent, and do away with that occupation? I don't see it. It is too messy a process and too hands on a profession tying together all the people that you need to, to sell a house, or look for houses.

Hi Gary, I agree, "there's an app for that" might sound like a cool idea- but in the long run I can see so many real dangers in it. Buying real property is the largest investment most people will ever make- there's something to be said for working with experienced professionals

I hope not, and even though things defintely are changing, all occupations are!

Good morning Gary. I tend to agree with you. Unless the process changes drastically I don't see it either.

I've never been threatened by online media sites, apps or anything else that threatens to put us out of business.  As you point out, this gets more complicated every year.

If there is ever a virtual lawyer app that works and is used 99% of the time, I would be concerned.  Until then, just like lawsuits, there are so many ins and outs to this that an app would likely cause more problems than it would solve.

Gary-RE is a people business so I do see realtors becoming dinosaurs. Great post. Too bad the boneheads that think there is an app for that didn't read this but they still wouldn't GET IT.

Yup, I say it IS a people business even though it's become a paper business, wading through all of the hoops we are put through to dot every "i" and cross every "t". My principal broker, who just retired after umpteen years, told me that she was tired of how it's become vs the old days. She said, "It's not fun anymore". And she used to say that it was only a one page document usually.
