Are You Memorable?

A marketing email I got yesterday, and still haven’t read, asked this question. It started me thinking.

Of course I want to be memorable, don’t you? And in a positive way, not because of doing a bad job during the transaction. There are abundant opportunities to become memorable before and during transaction, as well as after.

BEING MEMORABLE BEFORE & DURING THE TRANSACTION

meeting a client for the first timeCommunication – even before you meet in person your communication can start you on the way to being memorable, simply by being an effective and consistent communicator.

Why? Because so many people aren’t.

You don’t want a lack of communication to result in memory loss of who you are before you even really get going do you?!

Once in a transaction buyers and sellers will remember good communication that keeps them informed, answers their questions, helps solve their problems, and demonstrates you care about them.

Competence – this goes without saying, but doing your job, and doing it well, will be remembered. And of course that helps get the client to the closing table, unless there are good reasons to not go there! But so will not doing your job…perhaps even more so, and that’s worse. You can bet clients will remember a bad job AND they will share it with others!

There are plenty of ways we can amaze, amuze, delight and surprise our clients, and doing so will help make us memorable. And sometimes it’s those little things that really matter and will be remembered, and so will you!

YOUR CLIENT’S EMOTIONAL MEMORY

do your clients love you?Keep in mind that emotions and the events that cause them tend to be remembered well after they happen.

Think of the memories invoked by events in your personal life, good and bad. Years later those emotions, and memories, still linger don’t they? And your thoughts about those events even years ago can trigger those emotions.

Selling or buying a home can become incredibly emotional for buyers and sellers. And those emotions, and the situations that caused them, will not easily be forgotten. While we cannot control the emotions our clients experience, and sometimes the situations that arise which result in those emotions, what we do or don’t do will very likely remain part of their memory.

ARE YOU MEMORABLE AFTER THE TRANSACTION ENDS?

Happy Birthday cardCertainly after the transaction ends, and the flurry of emails, texts and calls drops to nothing, or almost so, we want to be remembered by buyers and sellers.

Human memory being what it is, a little help is probably needed to remain memorable, especially as time passes and busy life intervenes.

Don’t assume you will remain top of mind months and years later, no matter how great a job you did with your client’s purchase or sale!

There are plenty of ways to stay in touch, and continue showing you care after the transaction has ended. Here are just a few, but feel to share others you use successfully:

Follow-up calls & cards soon after closing

Settlement Statements sent the beginning of the following year for taxes

Birthday & Un-birthday Cards

Anniversary Cards

House-i-versary Cards

Market Reports

Newsletters

Pop-bys

Holiday Cards (July 4th, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, etc.)

Phone calls

Helpful Information on Multiple Topics (e.g., insurance, taxes) – just be careful of the role you are playing and get advice from experts

Congratulatory Cards and Facebook Messages (e.g., new family member, graduation, new job, new pet, loss of a pet)

Gratitude/Appreciation Parties

Thanksgiving Pie Give-a-Ways

Staying in touch regularly, providing information of value, and doing unique things, will help you remain memorable, in addition to the memory of who you were during the transaction and what you did for your clients.

Are YOU memorable? If not, you can be.
