Katie's first boat ride...

By

Yesterday my husband, son, and I went out on the river to do the final break-in hour on our son's new boat. Of course we took the dogs...

Chad's dog, Puppy, is used to boats. The two of them go fishing quite often.

Katie was another story. Chad had to pick her up and put her in the boat, and once there, she was nervous. She kept looking at me, my husband, Chad, and Puppy like we "should" know something wasn't quite right here.

We kept telling her not to worry. You can see from the look on her face that we didn't convince her.

Worried dog

For the first hour she only walked around looking for reassurance - getting lots of pets and back-rubs.

But then, the next step in breaking in is to open up the throttle and go fast, and THAT was too much for her.

Before I knew it, I had 85 pounds of dog and fur in my lap, snuggled up as tight as she could get.

really worried dog

Those toenails hanging on to my legs were sure sharp!

Right now I'm not so sure that Katie will have a second boat ride. We'll see...

Marte,

Love the photos and that is one adorable dog...Hopefully she will get over her fear of water.  A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - She is adorable, but she sure is heavy! I tease her for being such a big baby when she sounds like the beast who would eat an intruder.

Whoa Marte, that's a lot of scared dog to be sitting on your lap. We were lucky to have both of our dogs love being on the boat.

Kathy Streib - She is definitely a lot of dog. When she put her front end up in my lap, that was OK. But then she started using those big back claws to get all of her up there - ouch!

She really is a fraidy cat. When she goes to the groomer she sits up and wraps her arms around my legs - "Mom - no! Don't leave me!"

I don't go fishing with the boys very often, so she didn't go out as a baby. I guess she should have!

Good evening Marte Cliff ,

Oh my goodness that is a lot of dog! 85 lbs. is a lot to hold. I'm with you ..not sure she will be on another boat ride anytime soon!

Dorie Dillard She might be OK if we putted around with a nice, quiet electric motor - but when that 250 hp outboard went full throttle, she lost it. She didn't like the part about bouncing over our own wake, either.

Meanwhile, Puppy was sticking his nose out over the edge, enjoying every minute.

Good morning, Marte... I can commiserate with Katie... that's exactly the look I have on my face when on a boat (but with fewer facial hairs)!

Nina Hollander - and you're lucky. No one picks you up and puts you in the boat against your will. Or - at least I assume so.

This is too darn cute!! We boat during the summer in Lake Havasu, AZ but we haven't attempted to take either of our dogs yet. Mainly because they are both big dogs and it gets way too hot out there.

Tina D Saporito, Your Dedicated Palm Desert, CA Realtor Since 2005 - I need to get Katie used to being home alone, so I can go along now and then this summer. Even if she liked it - it would be too hot for her. She likes cold. Because I work at home and we generally don't go anywhere the dogs can't go, she hasn't had to learn that. I left her home with my husband a couple of times and he said she walked the floor the whole time I was away.

My son's dog will be fine - he loves to stretch out in the sun when it's 90+. Maybe because he comes from Texas and has short hair?
