Clothes dryers with venting problems are a leading cause of house fires costing millions of dollars annually
Hamilton, OH--Clothes dryers are a wonderful invention, but they do require maintenance to assure safety in homes. The National Fire Prevention Administration reports over 15,000 fires annually, costing millions of dollars, many injuries and loss of lives.
Dryer Vent Wizard advises proper maintenance of dryer vents, including checking the lint screen before each load of laundry and cleaning after each load. They also advise consumers to have the dryer vent system checked and professionally cleaned annually. Dryer vents should meet the manufacturer's codes as well as city and state codes. In addition to proper installation, dryer vents should be as short as possible and contain few bends and turn which can inhibit venting and cause lint to build up and clog the vent. They use foil tape instead to eliminate protuberances that cause obstructions where lint can accumulate, eventually leading to a restriction which hampers dryer vent cleaning and allows lint to build up.

It is not normal for a dryer to take several cycles to properly dry clothes. When drying time is longer than normal, this may be a sign that the lint screen or the exhaust duct is blocked. Dryer Vent Wizard advises consumers to try removing the dryer vent tubing while drying one or two loads of laundry to see if drying time improves, to test for a venting problem being the likely cause.
