What Is An In-Law Suite?
Are you looking to buy a house with an In-Law Suite in the Delaware County Pennsylvania area?
Are you thinking ahead to the time when you may want to help older family members downsize and it would be so much easier to have them close to your home?
Well there are houses in and around Delaware County that do provide a separate but connected living situation. No two houses are alike in this regard, but they can provide a situation that can make life a bit easier for all involved down the road.
What is considered an In-Law Suite when you do a search on line?
Well it can mean a few things.
-It can mean there is part of a house that has a bedroom with a sitting room and a full bathroom in addition to the main living quarters of a house, set away from the main part of the house.
-It can mean there is part of a house that has a bedroom, a full bathroom and a kitchen, set off from the main living areas of the house.
In-Law Suites can be located on the main level, ground level or on an upper level of a house. Some are even located on top of garages or in a separate structure close to the house.
Most In-Law Suites have an internal door that separates the suite from the rest of the house. Most have their own private door to the outside, so the suite can feel like an apartment unto itself, separate living from the main part of the house.
If you are considering looking for a house with an In-Law Suite, approach your search with the understanding that you may need to tweak a living space to make it work for your particular needs. The only reason I say this is, because the term is used loosely when a house is written up on the MLS.
And please note, In-Law Suites are not the same as apartments. Municipal Townships can have strict guidelines about what qualifies as an In-Law Suite.
