Home Staging-What if Your Toolbox Disappeared?

What if your toolbox disappeared suddenly and you had to start over?  Catastrophe, right?  Most of us are so used to the tools and accessories that we use daily that to have to start all over again could be mind numbing. We have built up our supplies over the years through trial and error, picking up pieces here and there as the need arose.  If you had to list all of the things you had, could you?  Do you have an inventory list?

Sheri Davis of Transformations Home Staging has had that happen.  As bad as it sounds, this is an opportunity for Sheri to start over with a fresh inventory and a new rolling tool case-or two.  It's also a wake up call for all of us to make a list of our supplies and sources in the event that this could happen to us, too.

Let's help a fellow stager out with recommendations on fave tools, hangers, gadgets, containers and more.  What splurges are worth it and what aren't?  What tool did you buy and never really used?  What tools are the ones you use over and over?

Do you have online sources for tools, accessories and parts? Or maybe a local source that will do mail orders?  Have you had really good luck with a manufacturer when a problem came up with one of their products?  Do you buy any items in bulk for a great price?  Now is the time to share your advice and learn from others at the same time.

If you have posted a tool or supply idea, please post again here with your link to make it easier for others to find.

Thanks and good luck Sheri.

Pam ~ There were some great posts on this, listing tools and general items we all kept in our toolboxes a few months ago.  I'll search for it and post back if I find it.  I pretty much know in my head what I've got in my toolbox(es) and I am still continually adding to the list as I find things that are new to me that seem to make certain jobs easier.

Here is one and it links to another one somebody left in the comments section of the post.  I know there was another later than this though.

Jennifer, great list!  I've never heard of folex-it's a carpet cleaner?  Goo-Gone is great and don't forget Goof-Off, too. I carry a gue gun too but haven't had to use it in over a year.  The minute I take it out of my tool kit I will probably need it. My Tibet Almond Stick is so old-but is still good.  For those who don't know, it's wonderful for blending in shallow scratches in wood and lasts a long time.  Toothpaste-for nail holes? Breath mints for fresh breath or is there a really clever use you have discovered?  Thanks for all of these suggestions.

Cheryl, I'm glad that you found this post.  Please feel free to subscribe to my blog.  I have learned so much from AR and I try to give back in return.  If you find some old posts with great tool tips please come back and post the links.  I did a search and found it was slow going.  I hope this will be one place where we can list some of the more useful tools, accessories and gadgets and a place to warn others about the waste-of-time-and-money items.

Pam your post reminded me in the IT world where we rely so much on our stored files on the laptop PCs, our bookmarks in our browsers, and all the Web access we have nowadays. Take that all away with a hard disk crash (at least the files) and it does set you back. Doing backups and having redundant systems can allow you not to be so stressed out when Murphy's Law hits. I actually one time left MY TOOLBOX, my laptop in a bag at a vacant Open House I did on a Sunday. I came back Monday and luckily for me it was still there. A safe neighborhood.

Gary,  losing a laptop is worse, I think.  One can almost always replace tools.  Recreating files and recovering information can be difficult to impossible.  You were lucky that your laptop was still there.  You must have been living right, as they say.

Hi, just discovered that it was Rachel Backus who posted about Wall Marker.

Plain chalk can work wonders when hanging pictures, too.  On light walls you can use a colored chalk dot instead of a pencil-just wipe off with a slightly damp towel or Mr. Clean Eraser-a wonderful invention.  If you discover that behind the drooping picture is a sagging nail, try inserting a couple of toothpicks into the space before you spackle to help fill the hole. Nice post Pam, hadn't thought of listing everything in my toolbox. Had wondered how to keep it from being stolen though, thought of girlifing so when it has to be left in the car it might not be too tempting to those who know how valuable tools are. Maybe I should do that and post it...

Ronelle, my car has a large trunk that I have learned to pack so that all of my basic tool boxes fit in tightly.  Two break apart cases like the one above, one long and one short rolling box and two totes.  I'm pretty careful and never leave my trunk open when I am loading or unloading, but I think I will be even more careful now.  I have my business name all over the tools and boxes so that they won't get confused with the homeowner's things. Making the cases less attractive to someone else is something I hadn't considered. Good thought!

Pam, Thanks so much for the post!  I'll keep checking back in as I am shopping this week for all the tools I think I'll need for a big upcoming staging.  It is a whole house vacant in a Parade of Homes - and me with no tools?!?!  YIKES!   Thanks in advance for all the great advice from all -- Already I'm learning of things I'd never even heard of . . . tibet stick and earthquake putty (who knew?).

Sheri, you're welcome!  Your experience is a wake-up call for all of us.  I'm glad that you are learning about some new things too.  One thing I haven't mentioned that has come in handy is Velcro in all of it's forms.  In fact, I will post about it later to show something I did recently with the industrial strength form.  Good luck with the Parade of Homes.  Hope you'll tell us how it goes.

Thanks, Pam, for sharing and to everybody who added to the "essentials". Mind telling me where do you buy the Tibet stick? I never heard of it.

Thanks,

Monica, you should be able to find it at Ace Hardware or most hardware of woodworking suppliers.  It's wonderful.  Old English furniture and scratch polish is a great product too but it can be messy and it stains.

Hi Pam, Lots of great idea and I will bookmark this one.  One of the things that we must have in our toolkit are the "Ooks Nails" that are used to hang pictures in museums.  They are sold at Home Depot and make tiny holes and have a bracket that gives them more support.  You can buy different sizes for different weights.  We have tried several, but these seem to work the best for us in our projects.

Did someone mention the level of some kind?  A must to make sure those pictures and shelves get hung up level.

We also have clear push pins, a Black and different colored Sharpies to help fill in on furniture scratches or accessories, too.

Thanks again for your wonderful ideas!

Have a Colorful Day!

Irene, love that type of hanger.  I found a very similar product made by Hillman in a Homepak kit.  They are a little less expensive but work just as well.  Levels-of course.  There are so many great ones out there including the ones with lasers.  Sharpies and other markers for touching up picture frames- two different colors of gold and one silver for wooden frames that have nicks in them.

Great additons Irene, thanks.

Just want to add a package of those inexpensive felt tip markers that come in a dozen or so colors.  If you have wallpaper that has holes from previous pictures, scratches or slight wearing you can do a quick touch up.  Lightly fill any holes and indentations.  While drying, experiment blending the colors, layer by layer on a piece of scrap paper. Then reproduce by coloring within the lines very lightly since the spackle can be absorbent and the colors may be too bright. (Dry markers can be revived with a little rubbing alcohol.)
