Watching TV is something I enjoy doing on a limited basis each day. I enjoy watching the daily news to keep up with current events, watch a few weekly shows and maybe one or two movies a week. So I struggle with the barrage of commercials that are part of watching stations that have commercials. I understand that things have to be paid for in order to have shows but commercials are not the reason I watch TV.
Commercials are very intrusive to me with their high volume and the amount of time they add to the length of a show. So the way I deal with commercials is to mute them. I am very thankful for the mute button on remotes.
I use the remote button constantly. Since it is my pet peeve I take control of the remote when watching a show with Doug. I do not want to hear about the side affects of taking medications or the best local hospital that treats cancer. I do not want to hear how a car is rated over and over during a half hour show. Or hear about a mattress sale that is happening now. I want to take in the show only.
An experience I had years ago seems to be the starting point for my dislike of commercials. While living in a top floor apartment, the people living directly below me had TV's in every room of their apartment and most of them were on 24/7. The commercials would always roar louder than any car chase or shoot out. The people were not receptive to my request to tone it down after 11pm. Sure I used a white noise box to get to sleep, but it was still hard. And it seems from that point on I actually began to watch TV less and less, to the point where I lived a few years without owning a TV. I would go to movies but nothing in my home during that period.
Now as I think of things I am thankful for, for this Thanksgiving Challenge put forth by Debbie Reynolds, I realize that I am truly thankful for the mute button on remote controls!!
