ActiveRain Practices: Deceased Members

Some of the newer members of ActiveRain may not know that some of the blogger members have passed away. Many of the reblogs were written by deceased members. It would be nice if there were some kind of designation or note indicating that they are no longer alive.

Perhaps the word 'Deceased' could be placed behind the name of the known dead and the word 'Inactive' could be placed behind the name of those who have not been on the site for a year or more.

My suggestion is not an effort to find ways to honor deceased members. That can be done in blog posts. I am only hoping for simple designations.

What are your thoughts on this topic?

I agree, deceased isn't how I would want to be labeled after I expire.

How would you like to be labeled on ActiveRain after you expire? What word would you use?

Deceased is an acceptable term. Unfortunatley death is cold and final, at least on this earth. Living Legend to me sounds like the person is still alive. 'In Memoriam' could be added as well to a re-blog as well.

Makes sense to me....there should be something so people know when a member has passed.

I does make a lot of sense. I say lets get it done. We all probably know of a few that are gone.

That’s a great idea Roy. It would also help the newbies and those of us that don’t know from commenting on their posts.

You can never make everyone happy, but it would be nice to know when someone we follow passes on. In Lou's case, we knew, but there are others who passed away and we (I) had no idea. Someone earlier mentioned John Mayer's name. I had no idea.

Of course, someone would need to notify AR of the members passing. I like the idea of a title after the name, if not deceased, then "the late so-and-so".

From all the comments it looks like this is a topic that resonates with AR Members. Perhaps the powers that be need to revisit it and come up with a plan. I don't think I really want to see diseased after my name when I'm gone, but it would be nice to make readers aware.  In Memory of, or Remembering, seem like good suggestions to me.

I love the suggestion Roy. I think it is important that AR do something. I do like the phrase 'In Memoriam'

Hi Roy Kelley . I agree with you.  What I would like to see changed is when a member who was active over 10 years ago and has not written since still shows up as ranking high in a given city. Think that ranking should be changed when they have not been active within an agreed upon amount of time. Let's give credit to those members who are are actively engaged in the AR community so they can rank higher in their area of expertise. We could also have one of your awesome flowers to honor those that have passed next to their names. I would vote for that . :)

I agree Roy.  Their words, thoughts, ideas and helpful suggestions will always be here for us to refer to and still learn from.  Do not like "Inactive".  This indicates that someone could still reach out to them.  "Deceased, Passed On, or I like Resting In Peace" is more appropriate.  Thanks Roy!!  Let their words live on forever!!

If any designation is given, their comments on all posts need to be disabled to prevent spammers from using their posts, which would be easily recognizable with a 'deceased' designation, Roy.

To me, that's such a sad way to watch someone's legacy in writing - with all of the spammers using their posts to gain SEO, also hurting ours.

I like both "Rememberting" and "In Memorium". Although "Deceased" is accurate it seems, at least to me, to clinical.

I do agree that it would be nice to add this sort of designation but am aware that this could be quite a bit of extra work for the folks who keep this ship running.

I'm with Chuck on this... "in memorium" seems to be a softer way to say that.  And frankly I like being able to still go post on some of their posts.

Great  post and some very interesting comments. Death is inevitable, yet are the posts of / by members of AR the rights of the member/ estate or the organization? Seems like a legal issue must be clarified before any action is taken, don't you think?
