I would say to be very, very cautious around a home with 120 volt aluminum wiring.  I would not buy one and since I cannot recommend to anyone to live in a home I would not live in...well...I would not recommend it.

Dear Eric,

Around here, they put it in during the Vietnam War. Several houses have burned down over the years, so a lot of people have completely replaced it.

There are a few options that can help. Either way, potential home buyers need to understand it all first.

This is good information to share, Eric.  Here in my town, there were a couple of subdivisions that were built in the time frame when aluminum wiring was used.  And, those subdivisions have experienced more fires related to that wiring in their homes.  However, as you say, if a homebuyer loves a home, there can be remedy.

That's right Myrl... you can still buy the home. In the full article I talk about what I did to remedy the problem in my home. Basically I ran a new copper line to each bathroom and the microwave. The places that use the most energy. Changed the receptacles to be compatible with aluinum and also switched the lights to low LED. Now, the energy that is running through the aluminum wires is minimal.
