Are you feeding the birds?

Are you feeding the birds?

If you are, Why?

The birds can find their own food...most of the time.

Freezing rain does make it harder for them.

There are many reasons for feeding the birds.

One, people think they will starve if they dont' feed them.

Some just like to see birds, any birds.

Others as myself, look at the birds an extension of Nature.

I, We, my wife and I love to see how many different birds we can attract.

What most people do not realize is that it is the type of food offered that attracts the birds.

Birds of all kinds may show up, but if you do not have the food

they like they don't return.

Cheap seed attracts only mostly the more aggressive birds.

Most cheap seed has a lot of corn in it.

The better seed has much more variety of seeds and some kind of fruit pieces.

We have 18 different birds that visit every day.  My wife checks them off when she sees them

WE have 6 feeders that holds different types and size of seed.

We use 4 suet cake feeders.

Even the suet makes a difference.

The ones you buy 8-10 in a box are real generic.

I buy ones that have little corn and more mixture of seed and insects.

Yes, My birds eat well.

But they also give much joy all year long.

If you are going to feed the birds, spend a few dollars more and get GOOD seed variety.

You will see the difference in short order.

Didn't know that food makes a Differences. Nice thought but I did know we don't feed them.

We have jays who let us know if we're late with the feed in the morning. For a while we also had what I've always known as "Camp Robbers." I don't know their real name, but they are more fearless than the jays. One morning I was putting food out and one almost landed on my hand.

Those birds, who are gray and white, and chubby, got their name here by hanging around logging camps and stealing any food the men left laying around.

I use to feed the birds, but I began to understand that they were becoming feed for my cats.  And, you are right, there is a lot of available food for birds here in Sacramento.

William Feela I've read that it can also make a huge difference to offer the food in a wide variety of feeders, and that the feeders be at all sorts of different locations and heights. I've also read that it's a good idea to clean them as frequently as you can, to stop any diseases from spreading. There are some people who advocate eliminating feeders and just planting to provide food/shelter, to promote a more natural relationship between the birds and your garden. Back East, something similar came to my attention about Eastern Bluebirds. People like to supply them with houses. And people insist on cleaning the houses each year: turns out that might not be good for the birds.

Morning William.

I filled our three two days ago.  Got to fill them today, as most of the food is gone.

William, Wow 18 different varieties of birds!  I wish that were so in my area.

I struggle with house sparrows.  And all the pros telling me what they don't like is not true. They eat everything, believe me, except straight suet, not fillers.

Just so you know William, there is a Birds group here on AR.

Happy New Year and Happy Bird Watching!

Yep. If I don't get the feeders out each morning before daylight the birds let me know. I take them each evening to keep the Racoons out of them. Love to watch the birds. They are enough used to me that they fly aroound me when I am putting the feeders out.

Dear William,

Mine have not been eating as much as usual despite the cold. Maybe someone else has better food. They liked it in the past. I feed through at least the first brood. They will let me know, when there is enough other stuff out there by not coming as much. Are those wooly or hairy woodpeckers?
