According to a pool resurfacing company, getting the perfect deck for your pool is one of the many decisions you’ll have to make because not all decks are the same, and some are better suited to one environment over another. Some materials hold up better in certain climates while others are better if you have children.

In this article, we look at the multiple types of pool decks to better help you make your decision.

Concrete
Concrete is by far the most common material used for pool decking. If you go to a hotel or an apartment with a pool, chances are the deck is made of concrete. Concrete is popular because it’s easy to maintain. Concrete is comfortable to walk on, and it’s durable, which is the perfect choice of areas with high foot traffic.

The downsides to concrete are that it can become quite slippery when wet, it’s aesthetically unappealing, and it heats up quickly in the sun.

Brick
Another common material used in pool decking is brick. Brick is preferred by many because it doesn’t absorb the heat the way concrete does, and like concrete, brick is easy to maintain and is durable. Lastly, since brick comes in a variety of styles and colors, it’s much more attractive than concrete.

The major downside to brick is that moss can grow on it making it slippery and dangerous.

Pavers
Pavers are a stone, tile, brick or brick-like slab of concrete that are fitted together like puzzle pieces to make a smooth surface.

The biggest advantage of these interlocking pavers is that they’re inexpensive to install and easy to maintain. Also, pavers come in a wide variety of colors and styles so you can create a unique pool deck that perfectly compliments your backyard landscaping.

The downside to pavers is that they can shift position if they’re not secured via a strong border or frame.

Wood
Wood decks are common and widespread because of the sheer variety of wood types to choose from. You can get a beautiful pool deck depending on how much you’re willing to spend for exotic wood, or you can put up something nice, but inexpensive if you’re on a budget. With wood, you can create virtually any style you can dream up. Also, wood gives better traction, which is ideal for a pool deck that is constantly getting wet.

The biggest downside to wood is that it needs regular maintenance to keep it from cracking or warping.

Stone
Stone is another popular material because it comes in a variety of colors and styles. Stone is slip-resistant, but the downside is that it’s quite expensive.

Artificial Turf
The fake grass is an excellent choice because it provides superior traction and durability. The downside is that — depending on your aesthetics — turf either looks really good or extremely tacky. Also, turf does hold heat, which means it gets hot in the summer. Lastly, artificial turf is tough to clean and can be a chore to maintain.
