Colorado’s resort towns are booming, and not because of the fresh pow. There has never been more to see and do in these so-called “seasonal ski spots” than now, which are evolving into year-round communities. With the increase of telecommuting and an entirely new generation of employees and business owners working remotely, resort towns are seeing a surge of activity from buyers, not only looking for second-home escapes but also to set up primary residences in the mountains.

Despite the population increase, much of the state’s resort town charms remain the same – world-class skiing, memorable après-ski, and an abundance of trendy bars, boutiques, and cultural attractions worthy of their own Instagram account. Ask any local and they’ll tell you the same thing, nothing beats Colorado’s mountain lifestyle. Today, we put the spotlight on Telluride.

Telluride

What Makes it Unique

This former Victorian mining town has come a long way since its start as a camp along the San Miguel River. Set in a picturesque box canyon amid forested peaks, Telluride has transformed into the ultimate ski and golf oasis, well-known for zero lift lines and uncompromising beauty. Perhaps Forbes says it best remarking that “Telluride excels across the board and is a near-perfect gem.” Consistently ranked as one of the world’s best ski resorts, Telluride offers premier ski and snowboarding terrain with two distinct enclaves, Mountain Village and Town.

Sitting midway up the slopes rests Mountain Village, a bustling resort area high above Town with hotels, spas, golf, and multi-million dollar homes. The town is located at the base of the mountain and is filled with charm, from top-rated eateries to the acclaimed Telluride Historical Museum in association with the Smithsonian Institution. Butch Cassidy famously robbed his very first bank here, and there are strict zoning and preservation laws to ensure visitors are able to experience much of the town’s original architecture.

Local Favorites

In Telluride, it’s all about epic skiing and great food, which is why locals can’t get enough of places like Steamies for Colorado’s best burger, Brown Dog for Detroit-style pizza, and Taco Del Gnar for gourmet tacos. Of course, there’s also the high-end spots like La Marmotte for upscale French, and 221 South Oak for elevated dishes paired with an extensive wine list. And if in need of a nightcap, visit the Historic Bar Telluride at the New Sheridan Hotel – dating from 1895, “The Sheridan” is one of the oldest bars in the West and beloved by the locals.

The best part? Telluride’s Gondola will take you from Town to Mountain Village and back with ease. Stop by Telluride Sports on Main Street to get outfitted for all your adventures both on and off the mountain.
