Great GPS now $100. Still searching for Traffic GPS. Anybody?

Finally the GPSes have dropped to under $100 so they can make my $100 Tech Tips group (join).

The Tom Tom One Refurbished is now $100 after rebate on Amazon! How cool is that?

This is the exact one that I use. It is great. I don't get the need for the more expensive ones that have MP3 or Photo viewing. Just give me GPS out of the box.

Also the higher end models will read you the street name. Some think this is important, I don't.

But I still am in search for the elusive GPS with Traffic rerouting. Now THAT I would pay more for. I even bought a $100 device to make the Tom Tom work, but I can't get it to work. Don't believe ANY ads that say it works. Just believe it when you have a friend that has actually used it.

Here is the blog post on the search for GPS with Traffic, A Myth? Does anybody have a GPS that reroutes due to a change in the traffic patterns?

Wow! I can't believe you can buy a GPS for under $100!  What a bargain!  I love my overpriced GPS most of the time. The only time it annoys me is when I 'm in a neighborhood it doesn't know about.  Yes, I know I should update the software, but I'd rather buy a  new car instead.  Yes, that's nuts, but who cares?

Frank - thanks for the tip. I have been considering getting a GSP - driving with mapquest directions in hand is a hazzard.

Maureen! Come on! Bite the bullet. $100. I know times are tough, but this is a MUST have. If you even value yourself at $10 an hour, this will pay for itself in 1 month. This isn't some low end GPS either. This is a high end one that works out of the box with no upgrading or computers.

I even have one built into my car, but since the maps are old, I just use this on my dashboard.

Hard to get lost in Mesquite, but I did it yesterday in a big subdivision with lots of dead ends and curvy streets.  I looked like an idiot to my buyers!

Thanks Liz, it might work, but I don't want something on my phone. I need to be able to take calls. I know people who were like "damn, I have to go, I think I might have missed an exit since my GPS is my phone."

I think I might have gotten my $100 TOM Tom Add on advice to work. It now shows a green light. So lets see what happens when I get into traffic.

Frank, why didn't you just update the maps on your in dash unit?

The Tomtom is very nice. Some of the higher end ones also add real time traffic info and route optimization, both of which are handy. Route optimization is esp nice cause you can plug in a start location, an end location and stops in between and it will organize the midpoints for you for the best possibel route, with todays gas prices VERY handy!

GPSreview.net is a GREAT place for research and the MOD is very helpful in directing you to a GPS to fit your needs!

Mike,

The problem with In Dash units is you can't be in motion. So you can't even have your passenger enter in addresses. It is a pain in the neck to have to pull over.

Also the in dash unit costs $300 for the DVD every year from the dealer.

As for higher end ones doing traffic, have you personally done it? Unless somebody has personally done it, I don't believe them. I have bought 2 that were supposed to do traffic.

Route Optimization is good, but with idealRoute.com I can get away without it.

I will check out that site GPSreview.net, thanks.

Do YOU have a GPS with traffic?

Frank, I don't. I don't have a GPS yet I have been researching in depth to find one. Supposedly the traffic till work according to those on the site I mentioned. It is seriously a great site if you are thinking of a GPS.

I will check out idealRoute.com, I hadn't heard of it.

Thanks!

Have you looked at the Navigon units? They have a couple of their high end models (I've seen them at Staples for about $350) that have live traffic reporting... subscription free.

Hey Lane,

you really have to watch out, some of those services really suck. If it is based on the TMC standard, it sucks, I tried it with tom tom.

I just bought the DASH for $300. It is HUGEEEEEE but the traffic is kick ass. Actually giving you 3 route options each time, based on traffic
